What Are the Latest Miniature Gardening Accessories for 2017

The year of 2017 is going to bring more choices in fairy accessories for the miniature gardener.

With much fanfare and celebration, January 1, 2017 has arrived! This morning as I was thinking about the New Year and beginning to write a blog post, I glanced at the new minis sitting on my desk. Yes, I am the lucky one who is able to view the new fairy products before they are published on our shop…it is exciting.

As the seasons change, common decorations in my office are the latest fairies, fairy houses, fairy accessories, hardscape, and supplies for planning miniature gardens. Emails from the designers and suppliers, with images of the new products, occupy my email inbox. A walk to the greenhouse brings even more excitement, because my co-workers are tenderly caring for the newest miniature plants. It may be cold and snowy in Wisconsin, but we are busy planning for this upcoming spring and summer.

Designer Trends:

You may be wondering what are the popular miniature gardening looks for 2017 - I will share my thoughts on the top six trends. First, let us begin with the designers. During 2016, a new cast of designers entered the fairy gardening world. One artist known for her flair with color and patterns in cards and fabric, shifted her creative talents to fairy gardening. Another designer of the arts brought us colorful and whimsical designs. We also saw well-known fairy gardening designers spread their wings to bring us the earthy, primitive look along with the Industrial feeling of metal. Because of these artists, fairy gardeners will be seeing collections of designer looks with coordinating fairy accessories.

Easy to Follow Themes:

With the introduction of specialty artists, preparing a miniature garden will be easier if you are interested in following a theme. The designers’ collections have answered the question, “What goes with this fairy accessory?” Some of the current ideas are living on a farm, spending time at the beach, going to a carnival, and enjoying camping in the woodlands. The theme concept is a popular trend that will continue into the spring 2107 collections. Creating a well-coordinated fairy garden has never been easier.

Woodland or Forest Neutrals:

A popular color scheme for the past five years is the woodland or forest neutrals. In fact, Pantone’s color for 2017, Greenery, was inspired by nature. Earthy tones of browns, beiges, primitive greens, rich burgundy, barn red, mustard yellow and deep blues will continue to be popular hues for the miniature gardens. Accenting the neutrals with metal tones, seen in the Industrial look, delivers rich colors to the woodland or forest designs.

Bright Colors:

In contrast to the earthy hues are the bright crayon-box colors. Add a bold statement to the fairy garden, by decorating with vibrant and artful accessories that “pop” against the greenery of miniature plants. These vivid colors add much interest to the design, while offering a feeling of fairy playfulness and fun. The forecast for 2017…I predict the use of a wide range of color palettes, which include bright colors for fairy accessories.

Micro Minis and Tea Cups:

Just when you thought that fairy houses were small, manufacturers introduced micro and itty-bitty accessories to the miniature gardening world. What can you do with such tiny accessories? Arrange the little accessories, with some miniature plants, in a tea cup. The selection of containers continues to grow, as more and more tea cups styles are available.

Live Miniature Plants:

As the popularity of miniature gardening prevails, the list of available plants to purchase for the outdoors is growing. There are three trends that I see happening with plants. One is the increased use of succulents. Once you know the correct techniques for proper soil, watering, and sunlight, they are easy to care for. The second trend for miniature plants is their availability. More greenhouses are growing plants for tiny spaces and the selection has greatly improved. Some greenhouses have online marketplaces, which makes shopping easier than ever. Finally, the third trend is the increase in types of available miniature plants. Look for more plants in the categories of sun, shade, deserts, alpine, beach, flowering, and fragrant. I believe the selections will expand in 2017.

The year of 2017 is going to bring more choices in fairy accessories for the miniature gardener. Designers’ artistic skills will be embracing an assortment of themes and colors available for the landscape-sized miniature garden to the smaller tea cup, fairy garden. An increased variety of miniature plants will be at our fingertips. Are you as anxious as I am to begin planning a spring miniature garden?
