How To Know Your Car's Water Pump Is Failing

The water pump is an important part of your vehicle. The purpose of a water pump in a vehicle is to pump coolant continuously so the engine does not get overheated.

According to automotive experts, circulating coolant by the water pump is as important to the engine as gasoline. Water pumps in modern cars last for a relatively long period of time. However, that does not mean they are damage proof. Sometimes, water pumps get damaged and need replacement. Like any other mechanical devices you will have few warning signs before it becomes completely out of order.

How To Tell Your Car’s Water Pump Is Damaged?

When you see puddles of coolant under the vehicle or the temperature reading is high, it may be time to replace the water pump. Here are some common symptoms that tell you that your water pump is in bad condition and needs replacement.

Leaking Coolant

A vehicle’s water pump has multiple seals and gaskets that ensure that the coolant does not leak and its flow remains constant from the radiator to the engine. With time the seals and gaskets wear out, and may become dry or break. This gives rise to several leaks from where the coolant spills out. Whenever you notice coolant beneath the center of your car, call a professional. If diagnosed at an early stage, the leaks can be repaired and there may not be a need to replace the pump.

Loose Pulley

Listen carefully; can you hear a high pitched sound coming from the front side of your car? The buzzing sound is usually because of a water pump pulley that has become loose or from the bearings that have started wearing out. If the bearings fall inside the water pump, there is no way to repair it. You have to replace the pump.

Whenever you hear a whining sound coming from the front of your car that becomes louder when you accelerate, call a mechanic immediately.

Overheated Engine

When the water pump is not working at all, it will not supply coolant to the engine block. As a result, the engine becomes overheated. If this situation continues, it may cause damage to the engine like burnt pistons, leaking head gaskets, or cracked cylinder heads. Keep track of your temperature gauge. If you find frequent high temperatures, it is time to call a professional. The mechanic can suggest whether to replace the water pump or repair.

Steam From The Radiator

If steam is coming out from the front of your car when you are diving or stopping it, it is a sure sign of overheated engine. When the water pump is perfectly functional, it circulates coolant to the radiator and the engine maintains a consistent temperature. It is good idea to park your car at the side of the road and contact a mechanic when you notice steam oozing from the front. Driving the car with an overheated engine can cause irreparable damage.

If you notice any of the warning signs, it is best to contact a good mechanic at once. The mechanic can repair or replace the pump as required and get your car back in shape.
