Maps
The most used feature on your navigation system is the maps feature. Maps will give you an overall picture of the area you are in and provide you with door to door directions. It will also store previous destinations to be used at another time, eliminating the hassle of continuously typing in the same address. On a road trip, simply plug in your final destination and the maps feature will not only calculate your route but your estimated travel distance and travel time. It will also continue to keep these updated for any changes in speed, accidental turns or traffic jams. Should a road be closed, your navigation system can find you the fastest detour route. Although to keep up with the latest changes in your route or destination- such as new subdivisions, closed roads and businesses, it is important to remember to update your map feature regularly for these. To do so, visit your dealers/navigation systems website or review your owner's manual.

Points of Interest
Pre-loaded on your navigation system is the Point of Interest feature. This feature will display everything from actual points of interests such as landmarks, theaters, parks and historical sites to essentials such as ATMs, gas stations and restaurants. You also have the option of searching for certain businesses by name or category. This feature is very helpful when driving in unfamiliar areas or if you need a quick stop to refuel your vehicle (or stomach). All you have to do is search for a category and your navigation system will display the nearest of those. Like with your map feature, always make sure to regularly update your system so that it is aware of any closed businesses or points of interests.

Additional features
There are additional features available on your navigation system but each vehicle differs in their offerings. Some navigation systems display your speed limit while others show maps three dimensional. Most systems are now integrated with the user interface and can be synced to the vehicle to be voice activated. This means they will also show information pertaining to your vehicle such as fuel consumption. Your entertainment system will also be available through the system allowing you to sync your mp3 player and mobile phone.

With all the different options available to you via your navigation system, the easiest way to learn your vehicles navigation system is through trial and error. Experiment with the system on short distance trips to get a feel for it. Then when you are ready for your next road trip, your navigation system will be ready as well.
