GM To Add More Diesel Engine to Current Lineups

Not since the 1970's has demand for diesel engines and cars equipped with such been so high. This demand has caused all automakers and GM specifically, to reevaluate the use of diesel engines in their cars, SUV’s and trucks. Unlike in the 70's, automakers are not just putting the diesel engines into vehicles and shipping them to market, but are offering them as an option on several lines.

It reflects the changing market for vehicles, with consumers demanding more fuel-efficient choices and options. By taking the option route, General Motors also avoids the problem they had in the 70's of overselling diesel engines when the technology was still not mature for the smaller auto. With all of this considered, it makes sense that GM would add it as an option for more vehicles without committing itself and creating the same problems of the past.

With the number of GM vehicles with diesel engines expected to grow, the main question is what models will have the diesel engines added to their lineup. Besides the processes listed above, General Motors recognizes the potential that diesel technology offers in not only environmental savings but in cost savings for the consumer. While the per gallon price of diesel is typically higher than gas, the better fuel efficiency and economy allow diesel to be more competitive.

Diesel also presents GM with a greener option, especially since the mandate of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel is now widespread. Furthermore, the diesel technology provided by GM has now been successfully matured to the point that issues found in the past no longer exists. Things like excessive motor vibrations, loud engine noise and malfunctions of converted parts have all been eliminated. Combined with General Motors transmission technology the longevity of the drive train of the diesel now exceeds that of gas powered engines, depending on use.

Beyond efficiency and maintenance, another reason for more diesel engine options is the wider adoption of biodiesel. More and more consumers are coming to understand the benefits of biodiesel and the advantages in not only cost but in the environmental savings. Biodiesel offers many advantages over that of a hybrid or electric as the diesel has a longer range and capacity than either the hybrid or electric will still maintaining a decent power ratio. This gives the consumer a green option while still providing for power needs. This is especially true in SUV style units or units that tend to be larger requiring more power such as the Buick line of autos.

Since the 2008 financial crisis, GM has dedicated itself to producing quality automobiles and trucks. Adding more diesel engines to the already extensive line up of vehicles and options will help GM stay at the forefront of greener technologies while maintaining that competitive edge. General Motors is committed to providing efficient, quality vehicles that are affordable and useful for everyday driving.
