The Tradition Continues: The 2016 Mazda MX-5

Kept shrouded in a cloak of mystery, there is one thing about the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata that is for sure.

Kept shrouded in a cloak of mystery, there is one thing about the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata that is for sure. The newly redesigned MX-5 has a beautifully redesigned exterior - and Mazda has maintained the attraction that has kept buyers returning repeatedly over the last 25 years. Even though it is a little smaller than the current rendition, gone is the toy car look, but the zoom - zoom remains.

The aggressive stance of the MX-5 for 2016 is a welcome sight for the fourth generation Miata. The total redesign for 2016 has been a ground up rebuild of one of the most popular two seat convertibles to ever grace the roads.

Powertrain/Performance
Since specs are difficult to find, we can go with what we know. The engine will be a SKYACTIV 2.0-liter four cylinder for the U.S. market. Horsepower and torque ratings have not yet been revealed. But, we can hope that they will exceed the ratings of the same engine that is also currently used in the Mazda 3.

With 220 pounds shaved from the weight of the new model over last years by using aluminum body panels, the reduction of horsepower and slightly increased torque of the SKYACTIV 2.0 may not be an issue regarding the performance of the Miata. Our hope is that Mazda will tweak a few more horsepower from the 2.0, before they drop it into the MX-5. A six speed manual transmission will be standard, with an automatic transmission as an option.

Features/Trim Levels
Mazda has four trim levels available in the 2015 Mazda Miata, which includes their 25th Anniversary edition. Assuming they do the same for 2016, there should be three trim levels; but, we have to play, wait and see game. Reports from auto shows indicate that the new interior of the MX-5 show a clean layout with a center dash mounted touchscreen display.

The 2015 model was also available with a retractable hard top, which replaced the soft top. There is no indication at this time as to whether Mazda will offer the 2016 MX-5 in a retractable hard top model. A few of the standard features for 2015 are cloth upholstered bucket seats, steering wheel mounted cruise control, tilt adjustable steering, and one touch-down driver’s side window, sitting on 16-inch wheels. We presume the offerings for 2016 will be that and more. Grapevine has it the 2016 MX-5 will sit 17 inch wheels standard with wheel well space for 18 inch wheels, giving this car an even more aggressive stance.

Keep an Eye Out for the 2016 Mazda MX-5
As the company has kept the specifications for their new model secret, Mazda has not yet revealed a debut date for the 2016 Mazda MX-5. Keep an eye out at your local Mazda dealer for the arrival of the 2016 Mazda MX-5. You will recognize it immediately. However, if you can’t wait that long, not to worry, because there are still a few 2015 Mazda Miata’s remaining on the car lots and owning a 25th Anniversary Model will give you a true conversation piece. Stop by a dealer to day and test-drive a piece of automotive history.
