People love their cars. So when owners of the Chevy Volt got the chance to work with the automaker's engineering team and have actual input on the 2016 model, they jumped at the chance. Chevy's panel of real Volt owners were instrumental in suggesting new changes that would help to create a new and improved Volt for 2016.

Shortly after Chevy released the first generation of the fuel-efficient, economy subcompact, engineers for the Volt convened a panel of actual drivers in order to garner input on what they loved about the car and what new innovations they would like to see for the new model. This board of 12 owners from across the United States worked closely with the team that designed the 2016 model. Once a month, Chevrolet's engineering team reached out to their panel via social media, video chat and email to ask them questions about their driving habits and how the Volt helped them in their daily lives. They asked questions about where and when users charged their vehicles, which charging stations they preferred and what, if any drawbacks the drivers experienced while driving, charging and maintaining their new cars. What they got would have a positive impact on drivers across the country who would experience the all-new, customer tested 2016 Chevy Volt.

Volt asked and drivers responded. Current owners told the engineering team that they wanted a fifth seat position added to make short trips more comfortable. The team responded by not only adding this feature but introducing rear heated seats to the 2016 model. Customers also asked for a more interactive and intuitive control panel. The 2016 model has easier to use controls including climate control knobs, fewer icons and clearer operation buttons under the center display.

The engineering team spent many hours poring of more than a year of data on everything from driving habits to fuel costs, usage and other data points. They came up with aggregate numbers, measuring the elements that were most important to drivers. Depending heavily on the input of actual owners, engineers for the new model added some of the following new features:

*Illuminated charging port
*Heated steering wheels
*Greater braking control
*Driving settings customized to drivers preferences
*Spare tire
*LED headlamps
*Quieter engine noise when car is driving at low speeds
In addition to the suggestions from the panel, Chevy's engineers made a few upgrades of their own. The new model features safety features like Lane Keep Assist, which alerts drivers when they are drifting out of their lane and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which warns drivers when other vehicles or pedestrians are crossing behind the car.
