Six Words To Remember: Think Big, Start Small, Learn Fast

Having a business is not about small or big. It is about how we think, start and learn, so remember these six words!

I have always been amazed by my best friend’s impulsive actions in almost everything she does but I don’t know if I feel that in a good way or not. She decides everything so quickly only to regret later. She got married to her boyfriend of 8 years who is still financially dependent on his parents based on her irresistible impulse to marry him in hope he would change when he is a married man, but after months of marriage, she got her answer; he didn’t change at all. Not only that, she is always prone to impulsive decision to buy things without doing a proper research on the stuff she buys first. The same thing applies to her business. Yes, you read that right. She opened her business at the speed of light. Two years ago, she opened a business where she provided homemade healthy drinks using chia seeds. While the drinks were fine and delicious I might say, the planning itself was careless. I asked her, “Why did you suddenly open a business like this? Are you going to be consistent?” Ladies and gentlemen, I asked her like that not because I hated her business, but because I knew she was never the type to be consistent, but I also knew she would say “I am consistent,” which she did, but a year after that, she said she was moving to her hometown to get married and would not be able to sell her chia drinks anymore. Just a month ago, she told us that she started another business that sells fashion accessories for women, again, another impulsive action. However, what caught my attention was not how impulsive she was to open a business without proper research and thorough planning, but I was slightly irritated when she said, “This is only a small business, I don’t need to think big.” As someone who works on content marketing for business, I have always been so sure that you have to think big wherever you go and whatever it is you are doing. Of course, telling her would be so futile since she is never the type to listen to good advice, hopefully you will by reading my article today! In this piece, I’m going to tell you these six important words to remember in 2019: Think Big, Start Small and Learn Fast. Keep reading to learn more.

Think Big

When it comes to business, small or big, never ever think your business is small. You may be just a start-up, but are you planning to stay that way? I’m sure you are not. When someone has made a decision to open a small business, they are planning to grow that so it will be bigger in the future. Did you think Google set up their first office in a garage in 1998 to stay that way forever? No. Every business is set to grow and improve. Never expect to be successful if you don’t plan ahead. A mind that always thinks big will lead to a successful business. So, what does it take to think big? When you think big, you are willing to explore all ideas that come from your mind. You are willing to take risks and consequences but not without back up plans.

Start Small

It is not okay to think small, but it is highly advisable to start small. Starting small after thinking big is a very wise action in business. Rather than aiming high by flat out jumping on the bandwagon, break your idea down into smaller pieces for testing purpose. Avoid deciding based on wishful thinking and absurd intuition or just temporary trends. Start small by testing out your ideas one by one, planning based on the results and finding opportunities to expand and grow gradually.

Learn Fast

There is one thing that a business owner should know; a business owner is a forever student. A business owner never stops learning to improve their business. They will never feel satisfied with their current knowledge and income. While it is not good to be greedy, you still need to hone your skills and sharpen your knowledge as well as stay up to date with the latest trends in order for your business to keep up. If you make mistakes in your business, try to learn how to fix it and learn it fast. Yes, if you want to keep up with the world, you have to learn fast. Also, your customers’ feedbacks may also be useful to learn more about them as well as learn how to fix your mistakes.

Sometimes it doesn’t matter how small your business is and how you are new to this world. What matters most is how you manage your own business with the way you think, start and learn. In 2019, we can already see how tighter the competition between businesses has become and let me tell you this; it will become more challenging in the upcoming years. I don’t mean to scare you, but 2019 is so realistic. Therefore, think big no matter how small your business is, start small no matter how many big ideas you have, and learn fast no matter how well-resourced you already are.
