8 Ways Of Organizing Your Storage Shelves

Storing your stuff so you can easily find it on your storage shelves is a matter of being organised.

Most of us have a lot of “stuff” that we have accumulated over the years. Much of this “stuff” cost us a lot of work and to acquire (cash). It is would be hard to replace, we feel that we want to keep it just in case and it will come in handy if we need it “when”? This is the excuse for needing storage shelves in Sydney or anywhere else we live.

Some ways to ensure your storage shelves are well organized are:

1. Use one size of container for most of your “Stuff”

When you use the same sized containers, whether plastic crates, cardboard boxes or 20 liter pails if of a uniform size it makes it easier to stack them on your shelves and looks tidy.

2. Strong shelving

When purchasing or building shelving opt for the strongest and sturdiest you can afford. Even with light items in each container the total weight when sacked on shelves can be considerable.

3. Heavy containers

Place the heavy stuff on the lower shelves to avoid the need to lift them and consider using smaller containers for these items.

4. Identify all the items

When placing items in containers in order to easily find them list the contents on the outside, even if using clear containers as this will make them easier to locate. There is nothing worse than being in a hurry and having to go through lots of containers to find stuff. It is a good idea to list the contents on the side and on the top.

5. Catalog

Create a catalog or master list either in a notebook or on a sheet you can place on the wall. Having a shelving map can make location anything easy.

6. Labeling

Do your Labeling and list on your PC so you can print-out the master sheet and labels as needed. If you don’t have a printer place everything on a memory stick and go to your local internet cafe or digital photo shop where they can at a small cost print it all out for you, they usually are able to this on sticky labels.

7. Plan and Organize the layout

Regardless how large or small your storage area is you will probably access it frequently so plan and organize the order and layout of your gear by season so all your winter stuff is on one shelf and the summer things are on another. It is best not to place your dive mask and snorkel in with your winter boots.

8. Donation box

Having a container to donate unwanted items to your favorite charity.

Storing your stuff so you can easily find it on your storage shelves is a matter of being organised. Sort similar items that go together such as winter clothes into uniformed containers of similar shapes and sizes and clearly label items in each container and make a catalog of them.
