Finally, Microsoft Unveils the Windows 10 OS

After a long wait, Microsoft has unveiled its latest Windows 10 OS.

Windows 7 or Windows 8 users can expect to receive notices on their desktops from July 29th, providing an option to upgrade their Windows OS version to 10. Upgrading to the newest Microsoft operating system is free to those who take action within the next year. Regarding non-windows users, Windows 10 costs around $120 in the US.

Microsoft exercised more caution with Windows 10 following the launch of Windows 8, which was not a major success amongst users. With Windows 10, Microsoft restores functions lacking in Windows 8, such as the Start menu, along with major improvements and features.

The following are some of the new features introduced by Microsoft in Windows 10:

-IE Upgrade: Edge is a much-needed upgrade to the Internet Explorer browser, an alternative to Firefox, Chrome and others. New features include the ability to draw notes on websites and quickly share via a screen shot.

-Cortana: Microsoft’s “personal assistant” Cortana packs some powerful features, such as the ability to highlight a word on a webpage in Edge and look up definitions, details and explanations. Cortana also understands naturally spoken commands, answers questions, searches for files, and follows basic instructions such as “Turn off Wi-Fi” or “What’s Up”. It also analyzes information from users’ calendars, habits and routine to show personalized information.

-Multi-tasking: Users can view up to 4 apps at once on a single screen. After a user drags and snaps a program to a corner of the screen, Windows suggests other recently used applications to snap side-by-side.

-XBox Support: Gamers can play from any room in the house by streaming off the XBox console. Players can record and share clips from gameplay. Just like the XBox, Chat and activity feed is also provided.

-Faster Loading: Windows 10 features speed and instant updates. Assuming the hardware is capable, facial or fingertip scans can replace passwords. A feature called Passport will let users unlock and access many services without re-scanning.

-Free Office: Windows 10 will offer the entire Office productivity suite bundled for free.

-Bing’s Desktop Searchbar: Windows 10 features a powerful desktop searchbar powered by Bing (accounting for 20% searches on the web), with the ability to answer just about any question.

“If you’re buying a new PC, Windows 10 will be a great platform,” said Stephen Kleynhans, VP at Gartner. “If I have Windows 7, I will take my time. If I was on Windows 8 on a tablet or touch device or a desktop, I would look at moving fairly quickly.”

With Windows 10, Microsoft looks to regain the popularity associated with the likes of operating systems such Apple’s OS X Yosemite and Ubuntu in today’s modern digital era, where artificial intelligence is a tool for enhancing user experience.
