So you’ve decided to come to London to study, and you’re making the move away from your home comforts to the unknown, sprawling and exciting UK capital. If you are looking for shared housing or a homestay, London and its many districts are well connected to this relaxed but up-and-coming southwest suburb.

Streatham not only has great transport links, but also lots of high street facilities and the gorgeous green space of Streatham Common. Anyone new to the area would feel truly at ease here in a family homestay. London can seem a bit of a maze at times, but here’s how staying in Streatham could provide you with the tranquil yet fun student experience you crave.

Multinational Food

Streatham offers a fantastic range of eat-out options as well as fresh produce you can buy to make your own meals. If you want tasty and quirky, there are plenty of unique eateries serving delicious food that aren’t hard to find. Need a sweet treat? Try the delicious donuts from Thompson Deli on the High Road.

Stunning Art Deco Architecture

This suburb dates back to the glitz and glamour of the 1930’s. Grand department stores, mansion blocks and a quaint old-fashioned cinema line The High Road all make Streatham a feast for the eyes as well the stomach. The area has been stunningly modernised recently, with the restored houses towards Tooting Bec Common being some of the most impressive in London.

Easy Transport Links

Streatham does not have an underground station but it does have three well-connected overground train stations: Streatham Hill, Streatham and Streatham Common. They will easily get you to Victoria or London Bridge in just 15 minutes. Surrounding areas such as Dulwich, Croydon and Peckham are also easy to get to as the suburb is well connected to the bus network. You can even get the N109, N133 and N137 night buses to venture elsewhere well into the evenings.

A Beautiful Kite Competition

This adored South London annual event has been running for more than 20 years and is now something of a local tradition. It is free to attend, boasts plenty of stalls selling international food, has great music and of course provides a beautiful spectacle in the skies. London’s kite fliers compete on the Common for the title of National Champion. Of course, this is all in walking distance from your homestay. London and its colourful Streatham event will be sure to brighten up your student experience here in the UK.

Streatham is the perfect blend of happening and relaxing. I really cannot recommend a better place to base yourself whilst you balance studying and exploring in London.
