What Will Really Make You Happy in a New Apartment

When looking for a new apartment to rent or buy there are many criteria that we need to look out for. We want this to be a good financial decision (and a good investment if you're buying), we want it to be safe and secure and we need it to be practical and easy for our regular commutes.

When looking for a new apartment to rent or buy there are many criteria that we need to look out for. We want this to be a good financial decision (and a good investment if you're buying), we want it to be safe and secure and we need it to be practical and easy for our regular commutes.

What's perhaps most important of all however is much simpler - and that's that we're happy in our new place. So what is it that makes you really happy in a place? Here we will look at some of the things that will determine how happy you are in a property - it's not always what you'd expect.

Friends

When looking around a place to live it's important to think of the area around it and also of who is in that area. The best case scenario is to have a close friend who respects your need for space living about 10-15 minutes away. This way if ever you get stuck and need a hand, or if ever you want to meet for a cup of coffee and a chat, you'll have that option - and that's a sure way to be happier where you live. Being too near to the wrong friends though can be just as bad as not being near anyone, as you'll find you don't get time to yourself or that they keep turning up unannounced. Ask yourself if that's likely and consider looking elsewhere if so.

Space

Having space is very important when you look around your property, so you need to make sure that you have enough of it where you live. Being too cramped can otherwise place tension on your relationship with your partner/friends, while at the same time it might mean you feel you can't entertain guests or that you don't want to cook nice things in the kitchen. Make sure there is space for all your belongings too so that you aren't forced to leave your favourite ornaments or expensive furniture behind.

Amenities

If you have a grocers just down the road, and easy access to the centre of town then expect this to be something that continually makes life better. Being able to just pop down the road when you need milk, and being able to get to town without paying for an expensive taxi will make life much easier and you'll find that this means you have to drink less black tea, that you socialise more and that you have more time to yourself.

Condition and Utilities

When life is stressful and things are getting you down, having no hot water or finding that your oven isn't working can really be the last straw and make your whole world come collapsing down. Likewise the niggling discomfort of being slightly to cold, or breathing in damp can really get under your skin and make you that little bit more miserable. Key to being happy then is living in a property that is arm, well maintained and unlikely to go wrong. Check how the utilities are set up and look out for signs of damp and mould.
