Varieties Of Green Tea

Varieties Of Green Tea

There are many types of teas based on their oxidation states. We find orthodox, oolong, white, green and black teas. All these varieties do not come from different tea varieties but the single plant of Camellia sinensis. Out of all these, green and white teas have lesser oxidation states, so they are very healthy for regular consumption. Even within green tea, it has sub-varieties classified according to the minute differences in the ways of processing.

The Chinese Green Tea preparation method and the Japanese green tea preparation method both differ. Tea leaves are not withered in the Japanese process. Instead, the leaves are steamed to stop the oxidation process. In the Chinese way, the leaves are pan-fried to prevent oxidation. The steaming process preserves the flavour, colour and nutrients of the white tea produced. That is the real reason behind the natural flavour of Japanese green teas.

We should remember that not all green teas are the same. You should look for the leaves' shape, the colour of the leaves, and the scent of the dry leaves before buying.

We will now do a briefing about the best green teas you can try.

  1. Japanese sencha: Japanese sencha undoubtedly is the undisputed king of the green tea world. It has a fresh, grassy flavour. The leaves of Japanese sencha can be steeped three times at the least. However, it may taste not very pleasant if brewed more.
  2. Matcha: Matcha is a green tea in powdered form. The tea plants used for making Matcha are grown in the shade for three-four weeks before harvesting. The veins and stems are separated before processing. It is traditionally used in East Asia.
  3. Jasmine Green tea: Jasmine green tea is a type of green tea with a soft aroma of jasmine. For the preparation of jasmine green tea, blossoms of Jasminum officinale or Jasminum sambac are placed together with the tea leaves in some storage. Over time, the aroma infuses with the tea leaves. It has the same health benefits as those of general green tea.
  4. Guranse Estate green tea: It is an Indian processed green tea. Guranse Estate green tea has black, dark leaves, but the taste is never bitter.
  5. Dragon Well: This is a true gem from China. It can be counted as the most popular green tea after Japanese sencha in the world. It is lighter than many green teas. Take care about over-brewing, as it turns bitter on over-brewing.

Besides these five types of famous green teas, other types are renowned for their exotic flavour. As individual tastes differ, people choose to drink one or more types accordingly.
