Factors that can Induce Asthma in Children

Another common cause that can easily worsen asthma condition in children is low levels of Vitamin D in their body. Moreover several studies have found out that if pregnant moms had low levels of vitamin D in their blood it was highly likely that the offspring would suffer from asthma.

If your child is overweight then he may be at risk of having asthma suggests a new research conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The research found out that, school children who are overweight and did not lose weight at seven years of age were at a higher risk of contracting asthma than their slim friends. The study was conducted with over 2000 Swedish children till they reached the age of eight.

Being overweight at age seven was the crucial point. If a child is overweight but manages to lose weight by the age of seven then he/she is no more prone to asthma risk. According to Jessica Ohman Magnusson, the lead researcher, most overweight toddlers lose weight by the time they reach four years of age which is a good sign. But in case the child doesn’t lose weight parents should take help and make sure that their child regains normal weight otherwise they may have the risk of contracting asthma.

The research findings stated that overweight children were prone to asthma but this doesn’t imply that being chubby means asthma. There are several factors affecting asthma as both genetic and environmental factors play a role, being overweight may just be one of them. Even in the past several studies have been conducted with overweight children and almost all of them came to the same conclusion- that heavy children had a greater chance of contracting asthma and other problems but whether the extra weight was responsible for it or not, cannot be said for sure.

Another common cause that can easily worsen asthma condition in children is low levels of Vitamin D in their body. Moreover several studies have found out that if pregnant moms had low levels of vitamin D in their blood it was highly likely that the offspring would suffer from asthma. Even people who spend a lot of time indoors are likely to suffer from lack of Vitamin D (exposure to sunlight induces the body to produce Vitamin D) and hence have a higher chance of having asthma.

Factors like the condition of the mother when she was pregnant, the type of medicines she took, whether the mother was allergic or asthmatic during pregnancy, whether the mum smoked during pregnancy and other related factors also play an important role in determining whether the child will have asthma in later stages of life or not. Certain medicines such as paracetamol have been linked with the growing number of asthma triggers in children.
