They say that dogs are man's best friend, and anyone who has owned a dog themselves will be able to appreciate this statement and what it's like to have their own furry best pal. While that's a given though, it's important to make sure that dogs aren't just our best friends, but that we are their best friends too and that we're as good to them as we know how. Our dogs are completely reliant on us, completely trusting and entirely innocent so they're relying on us to give them happy lives and to take care of them - which often goes hand in hand.

So what precisely do you need to do to ensure that your pets aren't just healthy, but also happy and full of joy? Follow these tips and your dog should be just that...

Lots of Play

Dogs love to play. Psychologically they're the equivalent of baby wolves, and like any babies they love to play so that they can learn about the world around them and burn off all that excess energy. Unlike humans, dogs can't really entertain themselves by reading a good book, going for a jog or playing a computer game - they need our help otherwise they'll get anxious. Make sure then that you play with your dog on the carpet when they want to, and that you take your pooch out for lots of walks too.

Meeting Other Dogs

Taking your dog out for walks is also important because it gives your pup the chance to mingle with other canines and to interact with them. This is a great way to keep your dog happy and it's important that you choose places to walk where this can happen - imagine if you only ever spent time with dogs and never met other humans... it's the same for dogs.

Lots of Space

Likewise make sure that your dog has lots of room to run around as often as possible. If you only have a tiny flat with no garden then perhaps you aren't ready yet to have a dog? Otherwise, just make sure that you give them access to the maximum number of rooms possible and that they aren't cramped - particularly if they're big themselves.

Diet and Supplements

Make sure that your dog gets lots of good food and that means a balanced and nutritious diet to ensure their hair and skin stays healthy and glossy and that they are full of energy and able to fend off viruses and infections. This means being strict and even if your dog begs at the table for your chocolate bar you shouldn't give them any as this can easily cause diabetes otherwise.

As well, it's a good idea to look into health supplements for your dog such as cod liver oil which can help further improve their health and well being.

Vet Products

Of course it's also important to use a range of vet products such as worming tablets and flee products, and anything else that your vet recommends. It's very hard to be happy when you're down with a cold or covered in flees, so make sure your dog stands the best chance of fending them off.
