What Is The Best Pipe To Use For A Sewer Line?

Here are some tips for upgrading sewer lines.

Do you need to have your home's sewer line repaired or replaced? If so, it is essential that you carefully consider what type of pipe you're using as this will impact both the cost of the project and how long your new sewer line will last. With these issues in mind, here is a quick overview of which types of pipes are best for sewer lines.

Building Code Regulations

In the past, sewer lines were typically made out of cast iron, clay or sometimes lead pipe. However, most building codes now require that sewer lines are made out of either ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes. That being said, some local regulations do still allow cast iron pipes to be used for sewer lines, but this is typically not recommended.

What Are PVC and ABS Pipes?

Both PVC and ABS are types of plastic that are relatively inexpensive and built to last for many years. Part of the reason for this is that they can withstand extremely cold temperatures. Another reason is that they will not rust or corrode. Cast iron and other metal pipes are prone to rusting and this can eventually cause the pipes to leak or fail. While some sewer replacement services may still use cast iron or ABS pipes, most now use PVC for a number of important reasons.

Why PVC Is the Best Choice for Sewer Lines

ABS sewer lines were quite common in the 60s and 70s, but virtually all new homes use PVC pipes instead. The issue with ABS pipes is that they are often made from recycled plastic resin, which can make the pipes weaker and more prone to failing. ABS pipes still typically have a longer lifespan than metal pipes, but they still won't last nearly as long as PVC.

In most cases, PVC pipes are rated to last for around 100 years whereas ABS pipes typically only last for 50 years at the most. This is especially true in hotter climates as ABS pipes tend to warp in high temperatures or when exposed to direct sunlight. This is not an issue with PVC as it can withstand temperatures of up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit with no issue.

ABS pipes also transfer sound much better, which means that you will often hear water running through them. PVC pipes help to dampen the sound and are thus much quieter.

As you can see, PVC pipes have many advantages that make them by far the best choice for sewer lines. If your home still uses cast iron or any other type of sewer line other than PVC, we highly recommend that you consider having your sewer line replaced before it fails or starts leaking.
