Placing photos on kitchen tiles

By Joseph Parish

When preparing to design a new kitchen one of the elements which come into play is individualism. Everyone wants their kitchen to be unique and different than anyone else's and their desire is for it to be an expression of themselves. One way of achieving this is to employ personalized kitchen ceramic tiles. Suppose for instant you would like to place photos of your loved ones onto those tiles. Here you end up with a distinctive kitchen while displaying your love for your family at the same time. It really is not difficult to do these custom tiles and we can explain it to you in a few simple steps. A visit to your local craft store will introduce you to a product called Mod-Podge. This interesting craft supply is a combination of glue and sealer. The usual usage for this product is the construction of decoupage projects but it is open for use in a variety of different craft ventures such as for photos, ceramic tiles, and various fabric and paper expressions. In addition, you can purchase this item with several different finishes. At your disposal are the usual gloss and matte finish, as well as several unusual ones which glow in the dark, one which sparkles and one that is designed for outdoor projects. For placing our photos on the ceramic tiles we will be using Mod-Podge. The supplies which you will need are: Mod Podge Ceramic tile Photograph Foam Brush Procedure Begin this project by properly preparing the ceramic tile. It must be thoroughly cleaned and since the surface of the tile is smooth you will need to roughen it slightly with some fine sandpaper. Completely sand the specific area where the photo will be placed. Sand the surface until you achieve some what of an abrasive type of feel when you rub your fingers over it. This rough texture will assist in the glue taking hold. Wear goggles and gloves when completing this task and be sure to wipe off any of the ceramic dust which may develops as you sand. With the foam paint brush apply the first Mod-Podge coating on both the photograph and on the ceramic tile. Ensure that you brush out any bubbles which might develop in the Mod-Podge. Lay the picture down on the ceramic tile and carefully position it in place while using a small craft squeegee to smooth and eliminate the bubbles which may appear. Do not be concerned if the photo slides around on the ceramic tile, merely reposition it where you want it. The Mod-Podge should be allowed to dry for a minimum of 15 minutes after which inspect the tile. Periodically look at it to ensure that no air bubbles have developed and that the photo remains smoothly affixed onto the tile. Be especially careful that if the Mod-Podge is wet as there is a chance that the picture may slide into a different position. If this occurs just realign the photo. Try not to touch the tile until the Mod-Podge is totally dry other than to reposition the photo as necessary. After it has dried sufficiently use your foam brush and apply a second coat of Mod-Podge to the tile. Once again let it dry completely before handling. There you now have something that reflects "you" to place in your new kitchen.
