Treasures In The Fairy Garden

As I began planning a miniature garden, I decided to add garden accessories that were particularly special to me. Some of my favorite additions to fairy gardens include lakes, rivers, or ponds, since I grew up boating and swimming throughout my entire childhood. I am excited about the upcoming summer, as my baby daughter will get her first opportunity to splash in lakes and ride in fishing boats. Capturing those events in my fairy garden will keep our memories alive just as my dad's stories are a part of my reminiscences.

Throughout my life, my dad has always been an incredible storyteller, and he told me tales of heroes, living in the ocean or wilderness, who overcame incredible obstacles. I fell in love with the stories of heroic princes who fought the vengeful pirates on the open sea.  The valiant noblemen shared beliefs that were a part of their courageousness. Seizing treasures from the privateers, the rulers bestowed jewels and gold to the people living in the village. My dad's tales always ended with a positive message. Since I wanted these stories and characters to become a visible reality to share with my daughter, I knew planting a fairy garden would help me reach that goal.

I envied the heroes because it seemed like the tough choices were easy for them to make. Therefore, my selection of new garden accessories must capture the feelings of courage that I conjure up when I think of stories my dad told me. I will begin with a container that is large enough to fit the scene but small enough to rest on my front porch. Next, I will need to plan and purchase the miniature accessories.

I am looking forward to spring, but since the snow is not leaving the Midwest anytime soon, I will settle for hardscape materials to cover the soil instead of using miniature plants that will not survive our snowy weather. Since I must add a lake without using water that will freeze, I prefer to sprinkle blue glass pebbles on one side of the container along with sand to simulate a beach. At the shoreline, I am planning to add shipwreck miniature accessories with the waterfront dock. The slip will reach out into the water and become a place to anchor the ship. My design plans entail placing a drawbridge over the river, which flows at the base of the mountain path leading up to a castle-looking fairy house. Instead of a prince, I will use a garden fairy as the hero who has been off to sea and won many battles defending the people of the village. This particular fairy's actions not only protect the families living in the fairy houses but gives much-needed treasures to the villagers.

My miniature garden will highlight the tales told by my dad along with designing the water features to resemble our family's summertime days at the beach. Blending generational life stories in a fairy garden will create lasting memories - soon to be displayed on my front porch protected from the weather.
