Create a water source

Put a pond or a stream in your yard to attract dragonflies. You can use a large plastic box filled with water, or you can install a fountain. Put a stick in the pond or stream so the dragonflies will have a resting place.

Make sure the water is shallow around the edge of the pond and deeper in the middle.

Protect the pond from wind

You can protect the pond from wind by placing it near your house or a stone fence. Or you can plant two sticks in the ground and tie a sheet between them.

No fish or pesticide

Dragonflies are terrified of fish. They won’t stay in your yard if their sworn enemies are in the water. They also won’t survive in a yard with pesticide.

Sunlight

Dragonflies like sunshine, so put the pond or the fountain in a spot that gets plenty of sunlight.

Water plants

Put water plants in your yard such as black eye Susans and swamp milkweed. They’ll make your yard explode with color as well as attract dragonflies. Plant tall plants around and in the pond. Dragonflies like having a landing spot in the water. They also like perching on bushes outside the water so they can watch for prey in the pond.

Floating flowers

Floating flowers such as water lilies will attract dragonflies because the females lay their eggs on them. Those beautiful flowers will also make your yard look like paradise.

Rocks

Put flat rocks in and around the water. It’ll attract dragonflies because they like landing on them. Use a mixture of light and dark rocks.
