How to Make the Most of Trees in Your Garden

When people think of gardening they tend to focus mostly on planting the most attractive plants and flowers they can, or on growing their own vegetables.

When people think of gardening they tend to focus mostly on planting the most attractive plants and flowers they can, or on growing their own vegetables. No one really tends to think of trees as being part of a good garden design and instead seem to think of them as a somewhat boring necessity.

In reality though, trees are highly important additions to your garden and can do a lot to make it more functional and more attractive. Here we will look at some of the benefits of trees in the garden, and at how you can make the most of them.

Uses for Your Trees

Trees can create a nice backdrop for your garden that looks a lot more attractive than just having the bare fences on display. At the same time they can be a great way to give you some more privacy and security by surrounding your property, though it's important to avoid letting them block out light and preventing you from seeing out. If you want to make more from your trees, think of them as a great way to add a border to your garden. Of course though you can also use them in other decorative ways, whether you want to put one in the middle as almost a 'feature' or whether you want to create a nice patch of shade to put some garden furniture under. Note of course that not all trees have to be bland and boring - some can be very attractive such as willows.

Trees are also great feature for adding more diversity to your garden, and they can be great for growing fruit if you want to make your own cooking apples etc.

If you have children then trees can become more fun still and are of course a brilliant place for keeping tree houses or for hanging swings, ladders and ropes which are a lot of fun. Trees can also be great fun to climb on their own - and if you're an adult who has grown out of tree climbing they can provide a great place to get a workout. Finally, trees can also be useful for adding support for your fences and other structures.

Issues to Avoid

Trees can also have some downsides of course though and if you're going to get the most from them then you need to keep them maintained. One potential problem of course is that the roots of your trees become overgrown, and that this then starts to damage your building or your patio or pushing down your fence.

Likewise it can also create problems if your tree's branches grow too long or the tree itself gets too high. This can then start to cause problems for the neighbours by encroaching on their territory, damaging the fence, or blotting out light. At the same time this can also potentially be dangerous for children if they are likely to climb and fall. By keeping the tree well maintained it's possible to provide a fun climbing area that won't be dangerous.
