The Fairy Garden Magic of Waterfalls in Hawaii

I had the pleasure of recently visiting the youngest state in the United States of America and an island.

I had the pleasure of recently visiting the youngest state in the United States of America and an island so filled with the history of its people and respect for all those who came before them; I fell easily in love with the whole place. It is effortless to connect this tropical state with distinctive fairy garden ideas that pop into my head. It was even easier for my ideas to fall into the category of magical, but I could place fairies into the every unique setting that I have had the pleasure of visiting. When I went to Hawaii, I expected paradise with all the built in comforts of home in a large urban area. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the respect this entire community has for nature and maintaining the beauty and purity of the island.

This reverence for nature and how the environment felt wild and pure; compelled me to conjure pictures of miniature gardens with fairies playing among the walls of mini bamboo. I visualized the beauty of the rainbow eucalyptus trees captured in a well-designed mini fairy garden. I kept having magic pop into my head when we hiked up Mt. Haleakala and watched the sunrise at 10,000 feet. Wherever we traveled in Maui, the atmosphere felt authentic in a way that overly built up cities just cannot embrace. My husband and I decided to hike to this waterfall, and the whole hike there was uphill. I was so out of breath, I did not have a chance to appreciate the beauty surrounding me and when we reached the top of the hill and saw the 100-foot waterfall for the first time, the raw and powerful beauty took away the little breath I had left.

Prior to my trip, I said I would plan a miniature garden that “captured my idea of paradise”. The thing that I really was not expecting was how much different paradise was from my imagination. I am already itching to start a fairy garden to honor this once in a lifetime adventure. I thought that my favorite place on the island would be on the beach with a fruity drink in my hand. It was a wonderful place to be, however, my favorite places were deep in the heart of the island. I want to be able to build a fairy garden that captures the ambiance of a 10,023-foot volcano that we sat and viewed while the sun had to rise over the clouds, because the volcano was too tall to allow the clouds to pass. I want to create a rainforest themed miniature garden, and winding roads along edge of the mountain with no guardrails, and I want to build a miniature landscape garden with fairy accessories that resemble independent food trucks selling such delicious food that I would never be able to find anywhere else. It is so hard to pick one magical place, because Hawaii is beautiful in such unexpected ways.

The fairy garden I have decided to create is a waterfall, since watching cascading water was one of my favorite moments. I recently saw a tip on a miniature gardening website that showed how to add larger grey rocks to create the shape of the waterfall. Next, they recommended gluing blue rocks in place over the edge and ultimately having the rocks pool at the bottom of the base to create a larger than life waterfall. I want to remember the fact that we actually swam in a freshwater pool with a waterfall, created by rainwater, rushing down the mountain toward the ocean. It was larger than life, cold, and one of the most magical places we saw on the island. If you need to be reminded to believe in magic, do not hesitate to head toward a Hawaiian waterfall, lava tube caves, and the top of dormant volcanos that give you views of the island - you will not be able to see this paradise anywhere else.

If you are not able to experience the beauty of Hawaii, then I would suggest you decorate a waterfall scene with garden accessories including mermaids in the water, as well as flower fairies hiding in the rainforest surrounding the wet and beautiful waterfall. You could even add fairy accessories of a blanket, picnic basket, and a snack of cheese and crackers, as so many couples do after driving up and hiking the mountain. Remember to add fairy accessories of a pair of sunglasses, camera, swimsuit, and hiking boots to combat the mud. Once the plants and fairies are in place, your Hawaiian fairy garden will help take you away to paradise.
