The Newest Trend in Miniature Gardens - Tiny Tea Cups

If you grew up throwing tea parties with your siblings, parents, or teddy bear, this is the trend for you.  Miniature gardening or fairy gardens are unique ways to add tea cups to your everyday décor. Micro gardens in vintage or specially designed tea cups are an amusing addition to the inside of your home or even a patio table as a centerpiece that shows off the container, miniature plants, and garden accessories that you have selected.

When I start planning a miniature garden, tea cup container, I could shop at a local thrift store that carries china and dishes. This way, I can get varying and one-of-a-kind tea cups for a reasonable price. There is also no sentimental value to these items versus using an inherited cup from a beloved family member.  Greenhouses or online fairy garden boutiques are other shopping choices. Recently there have been containers created just to look like fairy houses and tea cups. A personal favorite of mine is the ‘Cherry Blossom Teacup Planter’, which looks as though it has been wrapped in bright pink, cherry blossoms and it has a tiny, garden fairy resting on the handle of the cup.

A tea cup is an nontraditional way to add colorful patterns to your home or garden.  If you are exploring for garden accessories, which add a ‘splash of color’ to a bland mantelpiece or picture window, this will be the perfect craft project for you. Another reason I really like this new trend with smaller containers, it is a great approach to start a miniature garden hobby. A tea cup garden is a smaller and simpler project to assemble than the more intricate gardens. If you want to start building a garden, but you feel overwhelmed by all the options in a real-sized garden, this is the perfect gateway garden.

Some time has passed since I started writing this blog post and my tea cup micro garden is complete! There were so many inspirations that I found online and my miniature garden is a mixture of all these designs. After I created my first tea cup fairy garden, I added it to my bookshelf in my living room and I got so many compliments. I even received requests from a couple friends to help them create their very own fairy gardens to decorate their homes.

These tea cup scenes were so small that we were not able to add large fairy garden accessories; therefore, we selected the micro fairy houses and adornments. Instead of the tiny gardens being the whole picture, they were more of a snapshot of a moment in time. While helping my friends, I recommended selecting a nice ground cover plant such as Sagina subulata, ‘Aurea’ or Scotch moss for covering the soil.  We wanted to make sure there was space for an itty-bitty garden fairy and other small items that dress up the tea cup garden. Next, leaning towards my favorite accessories, I suggested choosing a tiny sign and possibly a bistro set, so a tray with tiny tea cups could be placed on the table top. As always, my friends and I wanted the space to look warm and inviting. Since we know how much our fairies love hosting parties for friends, there was more than one cup for their visitors.
