A Day Off To Fish In The Fairy Garden

Some of the most memorable summer days involve a day off from work, a boat, some sunshine, and a couple fishing poles.

Growing up in the Midwest, days fishing with the family are a rite of passage.  I have always wanted to add a miniature garden to my porch that faces toward the lake and expresses my love of fishing.

When I am planning a miniature garden, I usually begin with my container choice, but since I wanted a theme that celebrated fishing with my family, I started with the miniature accessories and fairies instead. I was instantly attracted to the fairies “Fairy Charlie and Tilley” that would be an ideal addition to the edge of a body of water. With their toes almost dipping into the water, the fairies look ready to cast their fishing rods into the lake. Tilley is a female fairy in a yellow dress with a flower crown around her head, and sitting next to her is a male friend, Charlie, who is dressed in a light-blue button down shirt.

Another good choice for a lakeside, miniature fairy garden, is “Fairy Oliver" who would fit perfectly on the end of a dock; he is a bright little fairy with overalls and a loyal dog at his heels. After I fell in love with my fairy selection, I started building my miniature garden from the ground up.

I selected a container that was heavy and the blue tones emphasized the water feature in my newest garden. I always select a heavy container when it is located on the lakeside of my house, due to the wind that whips so strongly off the water. I set the garden slightly lower into the container, so the garden accessories would not blow off as well. To keep the image of the lake realistic, I planted some Scleranthus biflorus, 'Australian Astroturf' along the shoreline surrounding the little lake. Then I added blue glass pebbles and I edged the space with a darker stone. Once I finished the water feature, I added a tiny dock and boat as part of the scene. I also included a fairy house to nestle along the shore.

The house I liked the best is called, “Fairy Wharf,” which is a dark brown home with fish buckets resting outside and a "Gone fishin’" sign stuck to the front porch. The “Fairy Wharf” fits the best in the personality of this new garden. When creating gardens like this, my favorite part is selecting miniature plants that mimic full-sized trees and bushes that would normally surround a lake. My selection would be a Cupressus macrocarpa, ‘Lemon Cypress Cone’, which is a wonderful shade tree that is heavy with foliage in a lime green color. This was the perfect greenery to add to my garden celebrating my love of fishing with my family.
