To Remember You By - A Miniature Garden For Memorial Day

I have previously planned miniature fairy gardens that would mimic a barbecue get-together and replicate how I celebrate the day with my friends.

However, I recognize that various people spend this holiday with reverence toward the soldiers of our country. Many of us have family or friends who have committed their lives to defending America and its citizens. Some of the most meaningful and memorable gardens that I have happened upon have been planted in memory of loved ones who have passed away. In addition, a few of these gardens are to honor soldiers and veterans who have died for our country.

When spending time in the presence of these peaceful garden areas, I believe they are the perfect outdoor space to reflect and honor our fallen heroes. With Memorial Day coming up, I have seen more and more choices for decorating—specifically well-planned garden spaces. If you do not have enough space to dedicate an entire garden to your memorial, a fairy garden would be a perfect option to add to your home. I have seen some wonderful ideas such as a large ceramic pot sitting on a front porch or a flower box resting under a window. These window boxes are some of my favorite new ideas since they add an accent of green plants to your home and will hold a miniature garden, fairy house, miniature plants, and garden fairies perfectly in their petite space.

If you already have a window box, you are ready to start creating your memorial garden. However, adding window boxes to your home is a simple project that should not take longer than an hour per container. There are many window box plans available on the Internet, or you can purchase a box at your nearby gardening center.  The most important part of the installation is the placement of the box, the braces on the house, and securely attaching the components and fasteners. Consider adding holes in the bottom of the window box to allow for adequate drainage. If your window box is constructed from wood, then it is suggested to use a plastic liner to preserve the finish. Some gardeners prefer to use landscape fabric to line the box, which stops the soil from staining the house when watering.

Once you have finished attaching the window box under the window and preparing it for potting, the next step is to mix a water-absorbing polymer with the soil to decrease the frequency of watering and add the mixture to the container. Remember to use a potting mix instead of regular garden soil. From there, you are perfectly prepared to start creating the scene that will honor those who have died defending our country.

Start with selecting flowers to add to your miniature garden.  Red, white, and blue blooming miniature plants are a good choice for this patriotic holiday.  They will add an extra punch of color to your garden. Trees, shrubs, flowers, and ground cover are available in the miniature size. After planting the greenery, it is time to consider miniature accessories.

Some of my favorite decorations include fairy houses with flags decorating their front yard. I have also seen carved stones in the fairy garden with sayings such as “for the fallen” or “In memory of.” A personal favorite of mine is a patriotic garland hanging from the flower box and miniature flags decorating the edges with bright, colorful greenery filling the space. However you choose to decorate your home for Memorial Day, it is the perfect time to create a miniature garden to honor the holiday and your loved ones.
