Real Life Furniture Trends Inspire A Fairy Garden

When I was a little girl, I worked a side job at my neighbor's house across the street tending their big and beautiful garden. I would listen to music and spend my morning's deadheading flowers, pulling weeds, laying down mulch, and helping with additional grunt work that we like to assign to the young and healthy. Their garden was by no means miniature, but it was a magical place that could easily have been the home of many garden fairies.

When I am planning my fairy gardens, I usually try to capture the way I felt in this private green haven as a child. To me, it was one of the most beautiful and interesting places in our whole neighborhood, and it had a sense of wild adventure within. One of my older sister's friends lived in that house, and her parents added a large playhouse with a loft to the backyard. It was tucked beneath a giant oak tree and placed in the wild and overgrown part of their yard. When I would read fairy tales as a child that would mention a cottage hidden in the woods, this brightly colored and unique fairy house would always be what popped into my imagination - it resembled the neighbor's home.

I did not understand the importance of placement, color choice, and furniture selection in this green space until I was much older. I recently spent an afternoon sitting on the neighbor's screened porch, with my mother, while the owners were out of town. We had a gas leak at my parent's house, and while waiting for the gas company to arrive, my mother and I got comfortable sitting on furniture that has occupied that space since I was a little girl. Everything in their garden seemed to be put together so that it was one of the most comfortable places you have ever rested. We sat reclined in the shade with a cool breeze blowing off the lake nearby. I spent the afternoon looking at their garden and recognizing the thoughtfulness that went into every piece of furniture, every flower, and all of the outdoor décor.

If I were to describe the design of this garden, I could write for pages, but the most important parts were the many beautiful places to entertain and welcome their friends. Their front yard had several old wooden benches with iron frames—to send a signal of welcome and allow friends to take a rest. Around the side of their home, wind chimes sing to guests and a wall of recycled glass bottles capture the sun just like a stained-glass window. Entering their backyard, visitors would see a hot tub, an area for a bonfire, a screened porch, an additional bench, Adirondack chairs, and small bistro patio furniture buried deeper into the garden space. All of these selections were made with a desire to add personality, warmth, and welcome invitation to their garden.

When planning a miniature garden, I realized the neighbor's yard inspired me to do something similar; I was encouraged to focus on miniature plants, patio furniture, and the outdoor space surrounding the fairy houses. I went online and started thinking about the miniature accessories that I do not typically add to my own gardens and came across a whole section of decorative chairs and benches. I instantly fell in love with ‘Bench with Flowers’ since it would be a cool way to add a splash of color to a space that is otherwise naturally green. It also captures a playful and loving vibe that should be included in your home as you try to host parties for friends and loved ones.  Of course, the moment I started looking for chairs to surround my 'Outdoor Stone Fire Pit Pad' I came across the ‘Natural Adirondack Chairs’ which you could add to any part of your fairy garden. If you are like me, and you want your art to imitate life, then surrounding a fire pit with chairs is perfect—it is what I have done at my own house. There is a certain level of nostalgia and importance in these decisions for me because I want to capture that childlike wonder and total acceptance of magic in the world that I had while working in that garden. I even found a 'Beaded Curtain' that reminded me of the wall of glass bottles. It seems like the perfect full circle that the place that brought me so much joy also brought me so much inspiration when planning my miniature garden projects.
