How To Safely Pack Outdoor Furniture When Moving House

Learn how to safely pack your outdoor furniture and equipment when moving house.

Moving is not an easy task, and it takes up a lot of time and energy. It is easy to forget to plan for outdoor pieces of furniture till the last minute, and everybody knows that when you leave things to the last minute, you tend to make a lot more mistakes and, as such, cause damage or harm to your precious outdoor furniture.

It's not difficult to pack your outdoor furniture; however, if you want your pieces to last longer and serve their purpose in your new home, you have to take care of your outdoor furniture as you would the indoor furniture. Here are six tips to help you make packing less stressful

Assess your yard

Proper assessment of your yard will help you choose the things you need to pack. If you have any old furniture, you may decide to dispose of it. If it's still in good condition and serves a valuable purpose, you can plan to take it with you. This doesn't mean that you should take everything along. Consider if you'll have space for the items in your new home. If you don't have room for it and it'll be easy to buy a new one, you can give it out.

Inspect and clean

Outdoor furniture tends to be a lot dirtier than indoor furniture since more cleaning happens inside than outside. Thoroughly clean the furniture and inspect them for insects or pests. Always make sure you dry them properly before packing.

You'll need supplies

Get all the supplies you need from a local supply store if you don't have any. You'll need bubble wrap, packing paper, tape, specialty boxes for irregular items, card boxes, markers, and plastic bags.

Disassemble large detachable furniture

Instead of moving whole assembled furniture, disassemble them into smaller pieces. It is easier to pack this way, and moving is way easier. Plus, the risk of damage to a dismantled item is minimal compared to moving it whole. For furniture made of wood and glass, like a patio with a glass top table, you can remove the glass since it's fragile. Pack it in paper and bubble wrap first, then use furniture blankets to protect against breakage. In essence, all your fragile items should be protectively covered and packed in this manner.

Packing

The sole purpose of packing is so that you'd be able to move these items. You'll need to pack in a manner that helps you stay organized while protecting your furniture from breakage. As mentioned earlier, you should wrap all fragile items in paper and bubble wrap before covering them with blankets. If it's a sharp object, you can use pads before packing. Make sure everything you're putting into boxes is dry, and label everything so it'll be easier to unpack.

The moving process.

Now that you've successfully packed. It's time to move all your stuff into the vehicle. You can use equipment such as moving dollies to prevent injury to yourself. You can also ask for help from your friends and family if you need assistance, and you can't do it independently. Also, remember to remove all obstructions in your way during moving.

Alternatively, if you don't want to go through the stress of moving and packing, you can hire a moving company. If you want to save cash and do it yourself, it'd be better if you had extra help. Always make sure you supervise if several people are helping.
