When you get building work done this is an excellent opportunity to create something new and different from your home that you can benefit from and that you will enjoy living with. Often this means a new room or some kind of home addition, but sometimes it can mean simply extending what you’ve already got and specifically making one of your rooms larger and more spacious. This is a great thing to do if you have a box room and you want to turn it into a fully fledged bedroom, or if you want to extend your living room into your garden so you have more space for entertainment. Once you do this though, you then need to decide on what you can do to get the most enjoyment from it and how to really take advantage of your new room real estate. Here we will look at what to do with that new space...

Storage

If you are having trouble storing your belongings then opening up a room can be a great opportunity to put in a deep wardrobe or cupboard and really do away with that problem. This way you will be able to put away all your belongings without them getting in the way and still have room to move into the room.

Create Sections

Many of us presume that a room must be ‘one’ big open space with a central focal point that everything else is gathered around. However a much more efficient way to make use of your space is to have multiple different sections with their own focal points and to segregate your room up in this way. This will then mean for instance that you could have more than one seating area in a living room – which is great if you have parties, or if not everyone wants to watch TV, or it could mean you could have a ‘working area’ at the end of your room if you don’t want to add a whole extra office room to your property.

To create a separate section within the same room you need to find some way to make it stand out as slightly different. One way you can accomplish this is to use some kind of divider which can be any narrow item of furniture that partially obscures the visual field – such as a small table, or perhaps a sofa. Alternatively you can get this divide built into the room by using an arch way which will help to separate two halves of a room.

Leave it Empty

Of course another option is to simply resist that human urge to fill every space you come across and you shouldn’t underestimate how useful an open space can be. Not only will it look relaxing and calming and allow us to feel like we have room to breathe and think, but it can also come in handy if ever we want to do a workout, sit on the floor to play cards or wrap presents or just play with the dog.
