Minimal or flat design is one of the most powerful techniques in modern web design. It is one of those trends which is getting trendier and surely cannot be ignored.
Minimalism or minimal design has its roots in print design. It is mainly inspired from the Swiss style of designing which they practiced in late 40’s and 50’s. They used colors in a refined manner and the font style used was also mainly Sans Serif or Helvetica. Inspired from this type of designing, emerged the concept of minimal designing. Though it had its origin in 20’s, it gained the limelight three decades later. This started with multinational giants like Apple and Google adopting it and then becoming popular among the rest of us. Ever since its beta offering in 1990, Google has given utmost importance to simplicity in its interfaces.
What is minimalism or minimal design?
Minimalism or minimal design, as its name suggests is a technique of conveying more with minimum elements. You can call a design a minimal or flat design when it is subtle, that is devoid of stylized and glossy attributes. So, you remove all the effects like multiple and bright colors, fancy fonts and all other scream-out-loud effects and then what remains is your minimal design. But this needs to be implemented correctly otherwise it turns out to be dull.
However, if done properly, it can be beneficial too. Minimal design can help in prioritizing the content. This technique can help the designers to focus their design to simplify user tasks. Additionally, it can also improve the loading time of websites and apps and can provide better compatibility between different screen sizes.
Minimalism is often referred to as “LESS IS MORE” concept.
But it is way beyond that. On one hand it can be thought of as a powerful form of communication with minimal design combined with great usability, while on the other hand, it forces the designers to tell more with less which can be tricky to get right. Moreover, it also becomes difficult to convince the client for the design which has less objects and more white space as they usually want as much information as possible to be displayed on the canvas.
No one has a clear idea about the minimalism concept. It’s always like “You will understand it once you implement it or see it”. However, there are some common characteristics which the designers have agreed upon for the minimal design.
