On Youtube, It's All about Content, Not Content Contest

On YouTube, many people are competing for views by using useless content, but it's not about content contest.

In this day and age, I have seen a lot of influencers in my country sharing trashy content for the sake of views, especially on YouTube. Why do I call it trashy? That’s because the content is mostly useless and not educational at all. Although I can’t deny the fact that it is somewhat fun to watch, I still can’t spare my time to watch it more than five minutes, because, well, it is simply useless. I mean, have you ever found sharing content about pranking your older friend by telling her your buttock is bleeding and then showing her the fake blood, useful? It is totally useless, but the actress who owns the YouTube channel gets one million subscribers. Yes, you read that right. She is an actress and the popular one in my country. Her Instagram account has reached millions of followers already, so if you are wondering why she got one million subscribers, yes, they are probably her fans who want to support her, which leads us to this question; is her content actually worthy? Or is it just about content contest where people are competing for views? So, what’s the value of the content, then? That’s what we will discuss in this article. Keep reading to learn more!

In the social media world, we often find many influencers trying to do what it takes to get more and more followers and subscribers, no matter how controversial the content is, they still make it anyway. Let me tell you one of the best examples for controversial content some YouTubers do in order to get their content more views and possibly make it so popular that it is listed as trending topic. She is a very famous female gamer in my country. Let’s call her Kemmy Hemmy (not her real name). While her unquestionable gaming skill is true, what actually boosts her popularity is the way she presents her gaming skill. First, she writes rather ‘unusual’ captions for every video she makes (even captions for her Instagram posts as well), using the somewhat perverted and sexual languages. Second, she deliberately shows off her ‘assets’ (you know what I mean) in her YouTube videos and Instagram photos as well. Then, she makes sexual-like noises in her YouTube videos. The last but not the least, she makes content for video games but most of the videos contain indirectly sexual (or should I say ‘sensual’?) content.

Her gaming skill may be unbeatable than other female gamers out there, but unfortunately, most of her subscribers are only there for her controversial content. When people click on her YouTube videos, it is mostly because of her click bait captions. What’s wrong with people nowadays? Captions are mostly click bait on YouTube now. Influencers creating their own YouTube channel, trying to get as many subscribers as possible while using click baits and useless content; what are you trying to do? Who are you trying to influence and for what purpose? Influencing other people to do what?

When it comes to content for YouTube, you should have a purpose – not the “for my benefits” purpose but for making a difference. If you are a business owner and looking to use YouTube as one of your marketing channels, first you have to understand the meaning of content itself. Content is the purpose your viewers want to click your YouTube videos. Content that has values will last longer in everything than content that is useless and baseless. Therefore, your content should be:

  1. Useful with information and knowledge
  2. Helpful, which means, it is able to help many people in many ways
  3. Beneficial for both the viewers and you
  4. Gives positive impacts
  5. Gives motivation (if necessary)
  6. Helpful as a learning source
  7. Entertaining in a positive way
  8. Gives morale values

Nowadays, many influencers, actors, actresses or other public figures are competing for views as if it was contest. The truth is; what we really need is useful content that can give us positive impacts rather than controversy and gossips. Sure gossips and pranks are sometimes fun, but they are not doing anything rather than ‘entertaining’, and even some pranks are not funny at all. If you are looking to market your business on YouTube, start with something useful such as tutorials, product information and helpful tips for your customers or your potential customers. When you create content based on your real passion and the purpose to help others, your content will hold more values not only for you and your viewers but also for your business.
