Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente on Foreign Policy

Article I, Section VIII of the United States Constitution clearly states that the role and responsibility of the federal government is “to provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States.” That's a pretty clear directive, and it seems pretty hard to get it wrong or to exaggerate it unreasonably. And yet, in these troubled modern times, our federal government is frequently guilty of both.

We waste time, resources, and most importantly, American lives on pointless war such as the invasion of Iraq, ostensibly done because of some circuitous tie to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 – a tie which we know now and should have known then not to exist. In that debacle, we committed precious military resources to conquering and occupying a foreign country for no good reason, then holding it for years at great cost in blood and treasure, until we finally withdrew and created a situation worse than the one we found when we went in. There may have been greater justification for the campaign in Afghanistan, but with that stretching on for so long, it has become a huge drain on our nation as well. All told, we've sunk well over a trillion dollars into these wars – money we do not have, and which our children will eventually have to pay back.

And for what? Worldwide, the United States is seen as an aggressor and a bully. People despise us and are reluctant to work with us unless they have to. Heaven knows we've achieved little from the wars, certainly in Iraq, our withdrawal from which created a power vacuum that ultimately gave rise to the terrorist group ISIS. And, again worst of all, far too many Americans have come home in body bags.

Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente believes in the radical idea that the federal government should do what the Constitution says it should – and no more. It's there to provide for the common defense and general welfare, not engage in pointless foreign excursions against nations that have done us no wrong. Rocky wants to redirect resources from such wars to addressing our own internal issues, such as rampant poverty and lacking health care. He believes that this will improve our national image in the eyes of the rest of the world. And he understands that, by taking care of these domestic problems, we would become an even greater example of the capabilities of democracy and freedom.
