Pam’s New Sweaters

How to select a new sweater for your wife.

Pam’s New Sweaters

By Joseph Parish

Well, the way my wife Pam is losing weight these days and the onset of the cooler weather quickly approaching, I think I will have to surprise her with a selection of new sweaters. There are multiple reasons why people find sweaters attractive. Now that the upcoming cold fronts are approaching all the eastern states it is definitely time to bundle up. It is not quite cold enough for a winter coat, but some sort of sweater is called for. A quick browsing in the local department stores revealed a vast assortment of beautiful cashmere or fleece selections to choose from, both of which could easily take the cool chill off her bones.

Before I make a decision, there are certain items concerning the sweater that I have to address, foremost is comfort. We travel a lot and being comfortable is a good characteristic to have for her selected sweater. One interesting aspect associated with weather is it can be worn all year long. We reside near the ocean and any evening walk along the beach is sure to bring the breeze from the ocean to the land, making it a little too chilly for her. It is not unusual to see beach walkers wearing sweaters along the boardwalk as they spend an enjoyable evening window shopping, even in the months of August through October.

One of the most beautiful fall sights to see is a woman walking along a street filled with fallen leaves and wearing a sweater. This seems to bring out warm feelings about the season. As a young person, I remember seeing similar examples in Philadelphia as the people walk the tree lined, leave filled sidewalks during the Thanksgiving season. The people would stop at one of the many cafes in the city and sit outside sipping their hot chocolate instead of going indoors to be seated. It brings back pleasant memories long gone of blissful days. Sweaters and the fall season seem to go together like caps and mittens.

Many sweaters sold today are unisex meaning they are suitable for both men and women. This is true of the majority of sweaters unless you select the frilly, kind reserved for the ladies only. Since we like earth colors in our clothing, I will likely pick some brown, dark green or maroon color for her. I see no reason to sacrifice comfort mere to be politically correct. My wife’s contentment is more important.

I am starting to see more and more holiday sweaters showing up in the department stores. The closer we get to Christmas the more they appear to be on the clothing racks. Although, she has a small selection of holiday sweaters, I do not think I will add to her collection. I want a sweater that she can wear anytime she chooses without regard for the upcoming holidays.

One of the most important traits of a sweater for me is the aesthetic value. A sweater should not only be practical but pleasing to the eye as well. A nice-looking sweater in earth colored knit attracts my attention more so than the brilliantly colored ones in bright red or school-bus yellow. Just give me the good ole’ tans, brown or possibly a fall type of orange and I am content. The colors of the earth are soothing and have a calming effect upon most people, similar to a piping hot cup of Wawa coffee, whereas the bright colors raise the blood-pressure and get a person overly excited.

My last item of concern is, will this sweater keep my wife warm. Sweaters come in a variety of choices such as a light sweater just to take the evening chill off or a turtle neck version that provides a warm comfortable feeling. As I walked up and down the rows of clothing in the department store, I noticed such a large selection of types of sweaters ranging from oversized, turtleneck, cropped hoodie, choker sweater, bell sleeve, a sweater dress, twisted back, one even called a caged sweater. The employees in the store must have thought I was crazy as I write down all the different sweaters that they carried for sale.

Well, there you have it folks, all neatly bundled in a nut shell. No two sweater types are the same, and now all I have to do is make a decision on which one I will buy her. With all the preliminary research completed I will be visiting the store once again in the near future. Any idea which one it will be?
