How to Get the Most Out of Your Lighting

In Genesis 1:3, light was separated from darkness as the source of the divine, grace, and hope

Human civilization has ever since used light as a symbol for knowledge, purity, and evolution. In the Indian culture, countless festivities are observed and celebrated in the presence of light. A well-lit house conveys a warm and ambient environment and with innovations from the electrical equipment industry in India, you can decide upon the energy your house radiates.

  • Be Aware of Your Space

If you own or rent a small apartment in the city, chances are that you often feel claustrophobic, subsumed by the limiting space. Decorators work with small spaces all the time and they do not let this element deter them. Neither should you.

Try to “feel” your apartment. Does it have a romantic character to it or does it have a modern, eclectic feel to it? The answer may surprise you.

Once, you know what your apartment feels like get down to the next question: “What do I want to use this room for?” Depending on what you plan to use your room for (or have been using the room for), the lighting will vary. For instance, bedrooms would require lighting that can be installed with dimmers whereas your office could have a play of colours to keep the creative juices flowing. Lighting, including the right choice of lamps, right placement, and mixing different lighting styles can change the look and feel of the place.

  • Choose a variety of lighting

Most of us believe that a dissected approach to problems work better than looking at the problem holistically. When it comes to lighting a place, looking at the room holistically is a better approach. Mismatches, when done correctly can add luxury, comfort, modern, or traditional aura to your rooms.

LED lights manufacturers in India offer various options and it is always a good idea to learn about lamps. You can choose from floor lamps, table lamps, bedside lamps, canned lights, overhead lamps, arcing floor lamps, pharmacy-style reading lamps, industrial lamps, etc. Each lamp has a story to tell about your house.

For instance, pharmacy lamps are perfect for reading on a rainy evening, whereas a midcentury ceramic lamp paired with a love seat can offer romantic warmth. Arcing lamps immediately offer a modern element to the room and floor-lamps with tripod bases are another favourite among those who like style.

  • Mixing and Matching

Some of the best homes are the ones which have dared to experiment with their lighting. There are no rules that you need to follow when it comes to creating the décor according to your preference.

Whether you live in a rented apartment or own a house, each room will have at least one base colour, which is the colour scheme upon which the room rests. This is the colour that will help you experiment with your furnishings including your lamps and lighting. For instance, an overall white (ivory) scheme is perfect for creating a tropical setting. Put in a few tropical colours like blue, olive green, yellow, and earthy brown in your pillow covers, bed covers, and add a table lamp with a royal blue base and a white lamp shade.

Mixing and matching also lets you make a statement with your furnishings. Changing the lamp shade, varying the shade’s fabric will alter the ambience of the room. Linen and burlap as lamp shade fabrics go well with diffused light while white cotton and pleated silk are great for brightness. Do remember that you will have to clean the lamp shades; a good fabric will make this chore easier

  • Ensuring Safe Installations

You need to keep in mind that although your choice of lighting is perfect, it may pose a health hazard. Ensure that the lighting installations are close to the electrical circuits and that all cords are hidden from the plain view. If this not possible, invest in an alternate electrical outlet. Choose from the manufacturers of the best electrical switches in India to prevent short-circuits, electrocutions, and other accidents.

The corners of the apartment/house which are usually dark, such as the hallways and stairways require consistent lighting. LED lights are the best for these places ensuring a steady stream of light. Not only are they energy efficient, they last longer.
