Top Tips For Taking On A Cinque Terre Hike

Whether you’re inexperienced or a keen walker, these top tips will help you get the most out of a Cinque Terre hike.

With its relaxed atmosphere, authentic ancient towns and stunning views, there isn’t much missing from the magnificent region known as the Cinque Terre. Hike this stunning area and you’ll really get a feel for the place and create memories to last a lifetime.

The five villages are collectively designated a UNESCO heritage site and attract over two million visitors each year, who come for the fantastic atmosphere and the amazing food. But mostly they come for the coastal walking trails that connect the five towns and provide some of the most captivating outdoor experiences anywhere in Europe. The colourful towns perched on the edge of the cliff faces make for fantastic photographs and memories, and are sure to make you want to return again and again.

Here are some top tips to help you get the most out of your visit.

The Cinque Terre Pass

Access to some of the trails is made easier with this pass, and the money raised through sales go towards the upkeep of the trails. It’s not too expensive, and it gives you access to free wi-fi at the train stations in the area as well. Perfect for sharing that selfie with the shimmering ocean in the background!

Prepare for a Climb

Some of the views you’ll get from ground level can be deceptive, so be warned. The hill that leads to Volastra is around 600 metres up, and it really can take it out of you. Although the views are certainly worth it on this particular part of a longer hike, it would be foolhardy to attempt it without a good level of fitness and plenty of water – especially if you’re walking in the warmer months.

Dress for Success

Although most of the main trail isn’t too difficult, it still demands a certain amount of respect. Put it this way: you shouldn’t try the Cinque Terre hike in flip-flops! Good shoes (trainers or walking boots will be okay) and weather appropriate clothes and sun cream are advised to ensure you have the best experience while walking.

Visit Out of Season

If you want to come in the summer months, it’s a wonderful time to see the region, but be prepared for lots of other walkers on the trail. If you want to go at a more relaxed pace, spring and autumn still see plenty of good weather, but they aren’t so busy.

Get Started Early

Whatever the trail you’re attempting, try and head off with your group as early as possible. It’s a good way to beat the crowds and also means you aren’t doing the walking in the heat of the midday sun.

Adding it to Your Wish List

A Cinque Terre hike is surely worthy of a place on your travelling wish list, whether you’re an experienced hiker or just somebody looking for a very instagrammable backdrop! The best way to make the most of your experience is to take on the Cinque Terre hike with an experienced local guide. A tour with a small group tour can make the walks and the village visits much more interesting and rewarding.
