The Lowdown On The Famous Cinque Terre Hike In Tuscany

Discover the secrets to the perfect Cinque Terre hike. This is an experience unlike anything else in Italy.

One of the most captivating parts of Italy is just outside the Tuscan region at the gorgeous Cinque Terre. Hike between these five towns at any time of the year and you’ll be treated to views that are unlike anything else you’ll have seen or experienced before. Although it is pretty easy to have a great time on a Cinque Terre hike, there are a few tips and ideas that will make sure it’s a trip you never forget.

Taking on the Trail

With several parts to the trail, you can make your Cinque Terre hike easy or a little more energetic - depending on whether you want to walk the entire route or take the train in some parts. The Sentiero Azzurro (the Blue Route) takes you past all five of the towns. It has a little of everything within its seven and a half miles. It is a little trickier in places but well worth it for the all-encompassing views you’ll get. Although one section of the trail was damaged a few years back, it should hopefully be open again soon.

The shorter section known as the Via dell’Amore is a lovely short walk (under thirty minutes) between the two towns of Riomaggiore and Manarola. It’s easy to navigate and has some very pretty sculptures and hearts cut into the rocks along the way.

Another slightly more difficult trail takes in the numerous religious sanctuaries that sit above the towns. It’s a great way to get a different aspect on each of the towns and there is no fee to pay. It’ll take about five hours and provide you with great views and interesting sights along the way.

When to Go

Although it is beautiful all year round, the hot summers can make it a bit harder work. The winter, although much quieter, is not without the weather issues that can sometimes make the trails difficult to manage. The shoulder season is the perfect time to visit, with temperatures in spring and autumn much more pleasant and not so many people on the trail as in summer.

Top Tips

  • Make sure you bring plenty of water as well as a snack or two so you can get some energy in between the villages.

  • Wear appropriate clothes for the terrain and weather. You’ll be out on the paths for several hours at a time, so it’s important to have the correct shoes and outdoor wear.

  • A great way to cool down after a hard hike is a dip in the sea.

  • The most important tip of all is to wear plenty of sun cream, especially if visiting in summer!

How to Get the Most from Your Trip

The stunning experience is only a day trip away from the major Tuscan city of Florence, and you can do a Cinque Terre hike and be back at the end of a long but very enjoyable day.

Make sure you book your Cinque Terre hike with a reputable tour operator in order to get the most out of it. Having the benefits of a local tour guide can really make the difference between a good and a great trip. Not only are they knowledgeable on the route and its challenges and highlights, they’ll also be able to educate you on local history and culture as you walk.
