Immerse Yourself In Adventure: Morocco’s Deserts And Mountai

In my experience, there are two types of people in this world. There is the tourist who will remain very much on the road well travelled, and there is then the traveller who will want to push their boundaries and invite that extra edge of adventure into their lives. Here at Let’s Go Insure, we cater to the latter with our annual travel insurance policies that allow these adventurous types to step off the beaten path and embark on once in a lifetime experiences.

When I meet these free spirits and we discuss the greatest destinations around the world, I always like to recommend the magical and mysterious country of Morocco. This is an adventure seeker’s paradise with an ancient local culture found deep within the awe-inspiring Atlas Mountains and the vast, wild and untameable Sahara Desert, just waiting to be explored.

Check out this itinerary – it’ll take you far away from civilisation as we know it and deep into the Sahara, which is more like a Martian landscape than any other place found on Earth! Not many people have had the pleasure of feeling the sand of the Sahara beneath their feet whilst gazing up at an endless stretch of stars at night, so it is sure to broaden your horizons and arm you with hundreds of great stories.

Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains

Immediately upon arrival in the capital city of Marrakech, you will feel very far from home. This busy major trade hub is a feast for the senses, but it’s is only the beginning of your adventure. Leave the tourists behind and take the winding Tizi n’Tichka pass in a 4x4 where you will pass the amazing fortified village of Ait Benhaddou and the Draa Valley – a lush green oasis within a dry and desolate landscape.

Gateway to the Sahara

Next, you will stop off at Zagora in the Draa River valley, which is known as the gateway to the Sahara and is where your adventure really begins. You then settle at the Sahara Safari Camp – a cool tented camp which places you on the cusp of the never-ending, desolate and absolutely breathtaking Sahara Desert.

Opportunities

One of the best aspects of this trip is not just venturing out into the desert, but actually interacting with and seeing how the Amazighs (“free people” indigenous to North Africa) live. The local tour guides can arrange a variety of cultural encounters with the tribal community that you are sure to treasure.

After waking up early to catch the mesmerising sunset each day, you will have a few excursions to consider. You could jump on the back of a camel and head deep into an ocean of sand on a camel trek, or uncover the striking green palm trees in the dune desert on a demanding yet very rewarding trek on foot.

If you want to get your blood pumping, you will definitely want to embark on a thrilling 4x4 exploration into the desert. These are just a few options, but Kamel and the guys at the Sahara Desert Camp have many experiences that will really open your eyes to the great beauty of this lesser-explored part of the world.

Those with an adventurous spirit will love this trip and return home a changed person with a lifetime of wonderful memories. It is important that you know that not all annual travel insurance policies will cover the activities and excursions, so make sure that you and your belongings are protected with our comprehensive annual travel insurance. We understand that the greatest life experiences are off the beaten path, so we allow you to seek out adventure and try new activities knowing that you are sufficiently covered.
