Our Favourite Dog-friendly Attractions In Dorset

An ideal destination for dog-friendly holidays, Dorset boasts all sorts of amazing attractions where you’ll find a warm welcome for you and your canine companion. A common concern when bringing the family pet on holiday is that you’ll struggle to find places to visit where they’ll be allowed too, but in Dorset you’ll find a full range of appropriate activities and attractions, no matter what you’re interested in. Here are some great ideas to get you started.

Corfe Castle

The history of this amazing county is open for all to explore, including those who need to find  dog-friendly holidays. Dorset boasts a rich heritage which is definitely worth diving into.

The ruins of the ancient Corfe Castle, with striking views across the Purbeck countryside, are sure to enchant visitors of all ages. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead. Once you’ve seen the real thing, the nearby Corfe Castle Model Village and Gardens gives you a glimpse on a smaller scale of how the castle and village would have appeared in their heyday, as well as offering a range of other attractions such as a wildlife garden, mini museum and tea room – dogs are welcome here too.

Upton Country Park

For a really special place to visit during dog-friendly holidays, Dorset is home to the amazing Upton Country Park. This expansive area of parkland, shoreline and formal gardens doesn’t just allow dogs, it positively welcomes them, with a range of canine-centric facilities on site.

Dogs can be walked on a lead through the gardens and woodlands, and are allowed to run free in a 30-acre off-lead area with fields, meadows and streams. There’s also a fenced-off training and exercise area perfect for puppies or less obedient pooches, where they can run around without the worry of them escaping.

Afterwards they can cool off in the Stream Splash area or even enjoy dog-friendly ice-cream or popcorn from the Upton Tea Rooms. The main car park also has a self-service dog wash area, and no, it’s not just a garden hose – for £3 you can clean your muddy hound with warm water, dry them off and even make use of special canine-safe shampoo and conditioner.

Swanage Railway

This heritage steam railway runs from Norden to Swanage, and is an ideal method of travel for people who are looking for dog-friendly holidays. Dorset is known for its gorgeous countryside, and this is the perfect way to take in some sweeping views and make your way to where you’re going in style, courtesy of an old-fashioned steam train with its restored carriages.

Whether you’re taking your pet pooch to roam Corfe Castle or heading to the dog-friendly Monkey Beach in Swanage, this is a fantastic way to get there. A dog ticket is £1 for a single journey, and they must be kept on a lead and on the floor.

When it comes to dog-friendly holidays, Dorset won’t leave you feeling like you’ve missed out. With so much to see and do, it’s the perfect place to escape with your pet.
