Planning Your Putt: When To Golf In The Algarve

The Algarve is Spain’s hottest golfing destination.

The Algarve is blessed with breathtaking views of the mountains and sparkling blue sea, charming towns with winding alleys and a traditional flavourful cuisine. Top that off with some warm Mediterranean sunshine and the best golf courses in Europe, and you’ve got an ideal holiday destination.

Boasting an array of courses created by world-renowned designers, combined with fantastic landscapes and a favourable climate that extends the golf season, it’s easy to see why the Algarve is a popular destination among golfers. To get the most out of your trip to this elite venue, it’s necessary to know when to visit. With a good golf travel insurance policy and the right information, you can make your next getaway one to remember.

Spring: High Season

The spring months bring an overall improvement in weather with balmy temperatures moving into the twenties, as well as special Easter promotions for many courses. From March to May the gradual increase in temperature make for ideal golfing conditions, but this also means that courses are at their busiest, especially in May.

Summer: Mid-Low Season

June means temperatures begin to soar, nearing the thirty degree mark. As it heats up on the greens, courses become less busy and you can often find some great deals on buggies and special summer promotions. July is by far the hottest month of the year, so try to plan your tee time in the early morning or late afternoon. By August the weather begins to cool again, although temperatures are still in their high twenties; take advantage of those final few summer promotions!

Autumn: Mid-High Season

From about mid-September hotels begin to offer lower rates; with a drop in temperature and prices comes a surge in visitors. By October the golfing high season is in full swing and courses become extremely busy – prior booking of tee times is essential. By the time November comes around, great golfing weather is less frequent but still on offer. This is the time when you’ll find a drop in green fare rates.

Winter: Low Season

You can expect a noticeable drop in temperature throughout December, January and February, hovering just above the mid-teens mark. Some courses take advantage of the quiet months and close for maintenance, but the cooler weather offers a refreshing relief from the summer heat and good golfing is still available. With accommodation at its cheapest and empty courses, the winter months offer the chance for a first-rate golfing experience at rock bottom prices. You’ll also find local charities and groups running annual competitions around this time.

With this information in mind, you can plan the perfect golfing getaway. But no matter when you go to the Algarve, it is essential to find a golf travel insurance policy that’s got your back (and your gear!) covered. This will give you peace of mind so that all you need to worry about while you soak up the sun is bringing that handicap down.
