Go Fly A Kite With The Family On Fuerteventura

Looking for a simple, relaxing holiday that has all of the ingredients for family fun in the sun? Then Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands could be just the place. Beaches stretch for miles and miles and the (almost) guaranteed sunshine makes it an easy place to hang out with the kids.

As you head away from the airport on one of the convenient pre-bookable airport transfers, Fuertaventura’s stunning beauty reveals itself. Not as built up as many of the other islands in the Canaries, the natural landscapes are truly striking. The coastline is equally beautiful, with sand perfect for sandcastle building, waters calm and safe for little people and beachside accommodation options ideal for families.

Most of your time will no doubt be spent by the beach, but if you fancy taking the kids out for the day there’s the Baku Waterpark, with its wave pool, playground and jumping castle, which is a great day out for children of all ages. Or, why not time your visit with the International Kite Festival? You’d be in for a real treat.

The Fuerteventura International Kite Festival

Taking place in November on La Playa del Burro, a beautiful beach nestled into the sand dunes of Corralejo, this festival is a fun-filled frenzy of colour and a spectacle like no other.

It began in 1987 and every year more and more people come to witness this incredible event. All kinds of kites are flown in the reliably windy conditions, and you’ll see different shapes and sizes, with everything from famous characters and animals to artistic and imaginative offerings. There’s no doubt that when you’ve been here once, you will want to return. There’s even a club called “The Fuerteventura Kite Family”, which was set up for the people that have been coming since the very first event.

The great news is that the beach becomes a huge flying stage for three whole days so you can be flexible when you visit, although the atmosphere is contagious and you might end up going every day! The first day is a Friday and is pretty much a free for all, which can be lots of fun if you and the kids fancy joining in. The second day is set aside for the pros, who demonstrate their kite building and flying skills as well. If your children are not too young, you can take them to the nighttime display on the second evening too.

Sunday is definitely the climax of the event and is so much fun for the youngsters. Teddy Bears drop sweets from the sky and lots of free kites are given away to the children.

The Practicalities

In 2020, the festival is set to take place from 5-8th November in the Corralejo National Park.

How To Get There

When travelling to this island, especially with children, it is a good idea to book one of the convenient airport transfers. Fuerteventura is not a big island, but getting to your accommodation as quickly as possible is bound to be a priority when travelling with the family. Avoiding the hassle of public transport and a personal greeting on arrival are definitely major benefits of dedicated airport transfers.

Fuerteventura is such an appealing place for a family holiday, but head that way in November when the kite festival is in full flow and you and the kids will have a holiday with a difference that you will remember always.
