Sun, Sea And Sports In Sliema: An Active Family Holiday

Aquatic fun in the sun for all the family is what Sliema is all about. From your touchdown in Malta airport, taxis are quick and easy to arrange so your splashdown will happen ASAP! Here are a few of my favourite family adrenaline-fuelled and fun-filled acquatic adventure activities to try out this summer!

Diving: Go Head over Fins for Sliema’s Dive Sites

Renowned for its crystal clear waters (which allow for superb visibility), its wondrous shipwrecks and awe-inspiring reefs, this is an excellent place for both beginners and seasoned divers. Marfa Point Caves are a gorgeous place to start, with the chance to see tonnes of aquatic flora and fauna while you’re still finding your fins. 

There are plenty of excellent Dive Centres with highly-qualified staff, top of the range equipment and loads of experience, so do some research before going to find which will be the right fit for you. If your kids are under 15, make sure your Dive Centre offers a Junior Open Water certificate so you can get the mini divers involved too. 

Splash & Fun Park

This great water park is only 20 minutes away from Sliema by bus, and would make for the perfect day trip as a family. It is a little rough around the edges, and cleaner the earlier in the season that you visit, but don’t let this put you off! It has a constant surge of 1.5m waves thanks to the wave-maker, loads of jets spraying non-stop, and a lazy river you can float down on a rubber ring when you need a little break from all the slides, tunnels and the famous Black Hole attraction.  A 120m-long enclosed slide with swooping dips and exciting bends, the Black Hole is for adventurous souls only! Please note that the park isn’t particularly well-supervised, so do bear this in mind keep an eye your children if they’re younger or not confident swimmers. 

Rent a Self-Drive Boat

Who doesn’t want to be captain for a day? Renting and driving your own boat around Sliema’s harbour allows you to venture off the beaten track and explore at your family’s own pace. Exploring the city from beyond the shoreline will give you an entirely fresh perspective of this beautiful country. Picking up the basics and essential safety information is very quick and easy, which will leave you plenty of time to explore hidden bays, gorgeous coastline and sites of interest. You can even jump off for a little dip or stop somewhere for a snack or drink before heading off on your way again. 

How to Get There

You can fly into Malta Airport, taxi the rest of the way to Sliema and arrive at your final destination in around 4.5 hours from London. Ryanair and easyJet all offer the 3.5 hour route from the UK to Malta Airport. Taxi times to Sliema are only 20 minutes from the airport, and you can book in advance with Shuttle Direct, who will have an experienced local driver waiting at Arrivals, so you don’t have to stress and can just enjoy the views before your fun-filled family frollicking!
