5 Cheap And Cheerful Ski Resorts In Europe

Those on a tight budget may believe that a ski holiday is out of reach, but this is not necessarily true. Whilst these types of holiday are notorious for being expensive and are deemed a luxury, there are a handful of resorts throughout Europe which are much more affordable without compromising on fun. Here are five of the cheapest but still excellent ski resorts in Europe.

Sauze d’Olx, Italy

This idyllic Italian resort has managed to shake its reputation as a party destination and is now a good choice for those seeking great skiing and a mellow atmosphere. Even in high season, it is never too crowded, which means that you never have to queue long.  The lack of people also helps to create a relaxed vibe in the evenings, during which you can enjoy fine food and a few drinks without spending a fortune.

Borovets, Bulgaria

The oldest ski resort in Bulgaria, Borovets is the very definition of cheap and cheerful. It is much loved by young groups looking for lively parties once the sun goes down. The skiing is also excellent: there are wide, open pistes mainly above the tree line and slopes that are best suited to beginners and intermediates. Borovets is well-known for its ski schools, so those looking to develop their skills will appreciate this affordable resort, too.

Andermatt, Switzerland

Switzerland is famously a wealthy place, but skiing in Andermatt can be surprisingly affordable. It features two main skiing areas: one is situated at a lofty altitude of 2,963m and provides fantastic powder. Andermatt is also a good place for those looking for plenty of fun away from the pistes, as it features snowshoeing, sledging, swimming, spa days and lots more to keep visitors entertained.

Westendorf, Austria

Westendorf is somewhat of a hidden gem because it sits at just 800m, but you can get good snow at the start of the year with a few brilliant pistes and easy access to 279km of Skiwelt’s runs. The accommodation, food and drinks cost peanuts in comparison to some places, so you can make big savings whilst enjoying the lively atmosphere and lovely views.

Les Menuires

My personal choice would beLes Menuires. Ski holidays here are great for those looking to shred powder, as you get easy access to the enormous Les Trois Vallees ski region. There is a fun and lively atmosphere throughout, as there are lots of cheap places to eat, drink and enjoy other activities. What’s more, the cosy apartments are much, much cheaper than anywhere else in Les Trois Vallees. Essentially, Les Menuires ski holidays are a fun, easy and affordable way to enjoy one of the most popular regions in the entire world.

Whether you choose Sauze d’Oulx, Borovets, Andermatt, Westerdorf or Les Menuires, skiing holidays will be cheap and cheerful at any of these resorts whilst still providing you with an amazing experience. Skiing can be an extremely expensive activity at many upmarket resorts around the world, but there are also more affordable places that ensure that it is an activity and holiday type that can be enjoyed by those on a budget, too.
