Great Fishing Spots in the UK

Fishing holidays are one of the best ways to unwind, letting you put your angling skills to the test in striking natural environments. Here’s a look at some of the best fishing spots in the UK, along with some suggestions for amazing holiday homesyou might want to stay in to make your trip complete.

Rhayader and Elan Valley

You’ll find some of the best angling in the UK in mid-Wales, and there’s no setting more perfect for it than the beautiful surroundings of Rhayader and the Elan Valley.

The town of Rhayader is located next to the River Wye, five miles of which is open for river fishing in pursuit of salmon, brown trout and grayling. Rhayader also serves as an excellent gateway to the landscape of the Elan Valley, known as the ‘Lakeland of Wales’ for the vast reservoirs of water it contains – an angler’s paradise! Fly-fishing is permitted here, with 850 acres of water across 4 reservoirs providing a habitat for a thriving stock of wild brown trout.

Powell Newsagents in Rhayader sells a variety of angling permits for the area, or you can buy a permit just for the Elan Valley at the on-site visitor centre. With so many places to fish, it’s worth making a proper break of it here; there are a range of fantastic holiday homes in the area. A particular standout is the Oakwood Lodges which overlook the vast reservoirs nearby - perfect to put you in the mood for a day’s fishing.

Loch Lomond

For sheer variety on an angling excursion, you can’t beat Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Whether you’d rather fish somewhere busier with more facilities or find an isolated spot with nobody around, you’re bound to find the ideal location with a range of rivers and lochs available. You can expect trout, salmon, pike and perch on the end of your line in these locales.

Angling permits can be purchased from post offices, tackle shops and other retailers in the various towns and villages dotted around the area. Specific regulations can differ from place to place, so be sure to do your research first.

There are plenty of great holiday homes in this part of Scotland to make your angling trip a memorable one. If you’re just getting started or looking to improve your fishing skills, a booking at the Loch Lomond Waterfront lodges gives you the option of adding lessons with a local instructor to your itinerary.

Newquay

If you’d prefer to be fishing the sea rather than a river or lake, Newquay and the surrounding area can’t be topped. As you'd expect from a marine environment, there’s a huge variety of fish to catch depending on where you go. Towan Head offers a shot at mackerel, pollock, garfish, plaice, dabs, and, further along the headland, mullet. Alternatively, you might head to Holywell Bay for some great bass fishing.

It’s a great idea to book one of the many holiday homes along the coast for a fishing trip here. There are some brilliant apartments overlooking Fistral Beach which make a wonderful place to stay on a seafront visit.

Whichever of these spots you choose, we wish you the best of luck – and hope you land a big one!
