The Creatures Of Chamonix: 3 Activities For Mini Wildlife Love

Dog Kennels, sledding and animal parks? Check. Enjoy some nature-loving family fun in Chamonix with the perfect skiing

Skiing and nature go together like roasted veal and French red wine. When you’re zipping down the slopes of Chamonix, it is impossible not to notice the beauty of the natural environment. Sitting on Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in the Alps, Chamonix is a gorgeous area, offering views that stretch across the mountain valley and up to snowy glaciers on the mountain’s peaks. For animal lovers, there is plenty of great wildlife to see and experiences for the whole family to enjoy. Here are three that are sure to add to the family fun on Mont Blanc.

L'Elevage de Saint-Bernard Dog Kennels, Servoz

Home to around 20 St. Bernard dogs, these kennels are a great opportunity to see and pet these huge dogs and learn more about them. You don’t need to buy tickets in advance, and all sales go towards the upkeep of the kennels and its inhabitants. If you are lucky, there might even be some puppies for the children to play with.

The Merlet Animal Park, Les Houches

Situated above the village of Les Houches in the Chamonix valley, the Merlet Animal Park is a great vantage point from which to view Mont Blanc and its towering peaks. The park consists of 21 hectares of forest, pasture and rock, and is home to almost 100 animals. These include seven indigenous deer species, as well as llamas from South America. The animals are free to roam and can be approached by visitors as long as their space is respected. In summer, there are a number of exhibitions and educational sessions about the residents of the park, as well as great areas for picnicking. However, the cold of winter is when the park is at its most picturesque, thanks to its frozen streams and magical landscapes. The opportunity of a winter hike through the park with a mountain guide is not to be missed.

Dog Sledding

Have you ever been pulled on a sled by real mountain huskies? If not, then this is your opportunity. What is most exciting about dog sledding in Chamonix is getting to know the dogs. Cross-bred with wolves, these mostly Alaskan huskies are truly wonderful animals, and meeting them is a great experience for the whole family. Unfortunately for the children, they won’t be able to take these wild animals home with them, but it will be a memory they will cherish for a long time.
