Never heard of speed riding? Don’t worry, we have all the info you need to be able to try out this exhilarating and increasingly popular sport before the crowds literally crowd the mountains in their hordes… and parachutes! The Mont Blanc region really lends itself perfectly to this sport that all serious adrenaline seekers are clamouring to try out, and there are loads of speed riding schools in Chamonix offering lessons. What Actually IS Speed Riding?

Think of the sport as a blend of skiing and paragliding, where you zip down the mountain at very high speeds for an adrenaline rush unlike any other! The pioneers of recent years had to use modified kits, paragliders, or even skydiving parachutes to aide their descent from the mountain’s peak, but there is a wealth of new speed riding tech on offer. New kit is made from super light-weight materials and is designed using superior knowledge of aerodynamics, allowing for the smoothest and fastest possible descent experience.

Build on the Basics 

Because everything happens at such extreme speeds, it makes sense to build on your gliding control skills in a slower environment first to gain confidence and learn essential techniques. A one-day lesson would be perfect to master the basics and be able to enjoy this sport safely, and you’ll then be free to experience the sheer magic of flying!

Where to Speed Ride in Chamonix

Chamonix really is the perfect place for speed riding, as there are a wealth of both beginner and speedriding areas in the resort. Beginners can test the waters in Grands Montets, on the Glacier du Rognon slopes and the left sector of Combe de la Pendant, landing either in Lacancher across from the cross country runs or near to the Alpage chalets. Once you’ve exhausted those options you can head on over to the right of the Posettes piste away from the draglift, and land below the lift, or try out the area to the left of the Piste du Chatelet and land between the Vormaine ski area and the Charamillon home piste. 

Once you’ve worked up the courage and learnt the basics, it’s time to take to the skies! You can speedride in Brévent, the Ensa and Belin couloirs, Hotel face and Combe Lachenal, and we think you’ll end up hooked and want to keep chasing the adrenaline rush that comes with soaring down the mountains!
