Our Favourite Lakeside Holiday Homes

When imagining perfect locations for holiday homes, a lakeside retreat must surely top the list. There can be little more relaxing than listening to the lapping of water as you look out upon the natural beauty of your surroundings or cast out a line to try and catch a fish or two. Those who enjoy more active breaks will also find a lakeside location ideal for all kinds of pulse-pounding pursuits – as long as you don't mind getting a bit wet.

Scotland is well-known for its wealth of lakes (though remember to call them lochs while you're there!), and boasts many waterfront holiday homes - here's a couple of locations that make for a fantastic getaway.

Loch Lomond Lodges

Loch Lomond is Scotland's largest inland body of water by area, and one of the most popular with visitors, not only because of the stunning loch itself but also thanks to its gorgeous setting within a national park.

The Loch Lomond Lodges make great accommodation for a trip here. These amazing holiday homes are located in the beautiful village of Balmaha, which has a handy visitor centre to help you get the most out of your stay. The waterfront views make for a truly special getaway, but there's no need to settle for just looking! There are countless things to do out on the water.

A scenic cruise lets you take in more of the sights on offer around the national park – you could even pay a visit to one or two of the 30 islands dotted around the area. If you'd prefer to get active, a range of watercraft can be hired here, whether you'd rather be rowing along in a kayak or making waves on a jet ski.

The place is also a fisherman's paradise, with a huge variety of species to catch, ranging from chub to sea trout. There are plenty of challenging hiking trails around the area to take on if you want a break from boating.

And, while you might not have expected shopping opportunities, there's even a mall called Loch Lomond Shores, where you can browse top Scottish products or grab a bite to eat without even leaving the bonnie, bonnie banks.

Portnellan Estate

The Perthshire Lodges, another great set of Scottish holiday homes, are based in the gorgeous private Portnellan Estate, with magnificent views of hill and loch alike. It's the perfect spot if you'd like to organise a trek up the nearby Ben More, the striking mountain that dominates the area, or maybe enjoy the somewhat less daunting task of exploring Lochs Iubhair and Dochart, two scenic lochs connected by the River Dochart.

Guests at the Perthshire Lodges get free access to boats and fishing rods, so you can get out on the water without delay. Why not take a shot at canoeing across the loch, or give angling a go to see what you can catch? The area is surrounded by towering mountains, so it's a great place to put your hiking abilities to the test – or just kick back and take in the scenery.

These are just a couple of our favourite lakeside holiday homes – they're perfect spots for a relaxing getaway by the water.
