Is Operation Paper-clip Still In Use?

A brief introduction about Operation Paper-clip - a collaboration between Nazi scientists and America.

Is Operation Paper-clip Still in Use?

By Joseph Parish

In the year 1945 the Third Reich was on the brink of defeat at the hands of Allied forces. It was not long before this collapse of Germany that the world finally learned of the horrors which the regime had inflicted upon their prisoners at Auschwitz and Dachau. After freeing the agonized men, women and children from the German prison camps the American forces discover volumes of military and scientific knowledge hidden within the confines of the barb wire fences.

Under the guidance of Hitler, the German army had devoted more money than any other nation in research and development relating to military applications. The final results of this outlay were simply deplorable.

Not only had the German scientists developed rocket science and munitions to a fine art, but they contributed to some extremely ghastly human research within the confines of their death camp enclosures. These very scientists who so cold-heartedly exploited the occupants of the death camps were now free of their third Reich chains and could move onward as they pleased. Although these men and women possessed great knowledge and expertise in their fields, they were not particularly desired by the Allies, the truth of the matter was they eventually continued to produce their sordid experiments on other less fortunate individuals.

During the closing stages of the war, President Harry Truman foresaw a future conflict with communist Russia. As both nations’ armies invaded and took control of Berlin it was apparent that whichever country controlled the military and scientific secrets developed by the Germans would have an upper hand in the upcoming cold war. Within a short period of time the American authorities searched and discovered the whereabouts of the third Reich scientists.

Some of these professionals were readily accepted into American society while others produced a public outcry at the mere thought of bringing them to American soil. Our initial focus for bringing them here was in the area of rocket technology and their knowledge could prove invaluable. The authorities immediately set out to locate and bring these gifted technicians to our country. The complete project was given the code name Operation Overcast.

The CIA began plans to gather these scientists up and deliver them to our homeland. The initial scientist recruited was the German father of rocketry Wernher von Braun. Von Braun would eventually become a central figure for America's race for space. In 1946, Operation Overcast was changed to Operation Paper-clip which was effectively a program to recruit any foreign scientists or technicians which could be of use to the America military establishment. Men such as Walter Schreiber, who performed numerous experiments upon the holocaust victims were not welcomed by the public to our country. On the surface, it appeared that Operation Paper-clip was a great success for our side with its advances in code-breaking and general scientific excellence.

Unfortunately, we have now discovered that Operation Paper-clip had a dark side as well. Many of the relocated Germans were murdered and torturers during the war. Programs conducted by these men and women included the "MK Ultra mind control program" which had as its goals the ability to influence the thought processes of its victims. Keep in mind these people conducting these experiments were convicted war criminals now doing similar experiments in America that they previously had accomplished at Dachau.

Kurt Blome was placed on trial at Nuremberg and would have been sentenced to death for his war crimes had not America step in to save him. Their goal was to employ Blome for our military biological and chemical warfare program. His knowledge and past experimentation with plague vaccines on the death camp inmates earned him a position on American Top-Secret projects. Eventually justice took effect and Blome was tried and convicted for his war crimes in France.

The "MK Ultra" was not the only dark experiments devised by the brutal ex-third Reich scientists. As the "MK Ultra", rolled on there was another offshoot known as "Operation Midnight Climax" which saw paper-clip scientists experimenting on people who had been lured to various CIA safe houses by prostitutes and then drugged in order to analyze the effects of LSD on the mind.

Many of the scientists brought to our country were die hard third Reich followers who could never change their political views. In all we ended up bringing over 1,600 German scientists, spies, and engineers across the Atlantic specifically to work on paper-clip projects.

Eventually our country released hundreds of declassified documents which revealed the goals of Operation Paper-clip and the experiments which were conducted by the previous German scientists here in America. Don't think for one moment that these previous German scientists were trusted by America since they were not. Every project they conducted was supervised by CIA officials with many intelligence agents monitoring all aspects of the program.

In conclusion, it is evident that America, in the interests of its own agenda ignored all the gruesome pasts associated with the German scientists which were employed on the projects. One has to ask a very vital question when viewing all the evidence being presented. Could this happen again in America? I am ashamed to say, but yes, I believe that under the leadership of the right person these events could once again find a life.
