What Type Of Plywood Is Ideal For Making Furniture?

In India, plywood is available for residential, industrial and commercial purposes.

There are a variety of ways in which plywood is classified and these classifications are based on different aspects of plywood, the number of piles it has, its suitability for indoor and outdoor use, it’s grading as per quality specifications and its intended use.

When selecting plywood to make furniture, a lot of aspects need to be considered. For plywood furniture that is going to be kept indoors, the important point to consider is whether the wood will be exposed to water. For example, a dining table kept in the dining area or kitchen is likely to get wet. In such cases, the best type of plywood is BWR grade plywood. BWR stands for boiling water resistant. Sometimes, it is also referred to as BWP (Boiling Water Proof). The grades are marked on the plywood sheets, so that they can be identified.

For outdoor use, marine grade plywood is the best. It is more expensive and is usually used in industries, and for use in boats and ships. It is never used for home furniture.

If you are looking to make furniture such as beds, bedroom cabinets, wall panels etc. that will not get wet, interior grade MR plywood is suitable. MR stands for moisture resistant plywood. Note that moisture resistant is not the same as water resistant. MR grade ply is cheaper than BWR and is quite suitable for indoor furniture.

When carpenters are talking about interior plywood, they are usually referring to MR plywood and exterior grade usually equates to BWR.

The plywood market in India is largely dominated by the unorganised sector and locally made plywood is readily available in most places. It is very important to know your plywood before going shopping. You do not want to be fooled for an unbranded product at the cost of a branded one.

Selecting the right type of plywood is also important for your furniture. Always buy sheets of the right thickness. The ideal plywood thickness depends on what type of furniture is being constructed. Thicker plywood equates to greater strength but increased costs.

If not plywood, there are many alternatives available too such as MDF (Medium density fiber boards), and particle boards.

In any case, for longer-lasting furniture, plywood is considered a much better choice. Consulting a genuine plywood manufacturer is important so that you are not cheated on.
