What to Expect From Android in 2014?

We all witnessed how great the year 2013 was for Google’s Android. Many high-end Android smartphones got launched and acknowledged well by the users in the market. The demand for Android smartphones has been so high that unsurprisingly Android captured 80% share of the smartphone market by November 2013.

Not just the smartphone manufactures came up with various high-end devices, but even Google introduced many updated versions of Android. The most prominent being the launch of KitKat Version 4.4 on October 31, 2013 and the incremental update of Jelly Bean from version 4.2 to 4.3.

Now, as the year 2013 is closing down so it’s time to make some predictions regarding what we, the end users, can expect from Android on 2014.

Google I/O Releases

As you probably know, Google organizes an annual developer-focused conference known as Google I/O, where it makes announcements of updates for Chrome OS, Android, Google Chrome and its other services.

In the conference for 2013 that happened during May, Google did make some announcements regarding its 2014 plan. It is interesting that this year Google seemed less focused on Android as compared to the previous year. It is likely to gaze more on its other properties. So in the initial months of 2014, there will not be as such major advances happening to Android.

Android Update

Jelly Bean had the largest number of incremental updates as compared to other versions of Android. So, if this same trend is likely to continue in the year 2014 as well then we can expect some incremental updates of KitKat. As far as the launch of a complete new version of Android sporting a new desert name is conserved then most likely we have to wait for a longer time as KitKat got launched towards the end of 2013. 

Better Apps

Updates of the Android and Google Apps are highly expected in 2014. As there are all possibilities that Google will definitely bring some innovation and newness to its apps in order to keep its customer base delighted. In this competitive market, customers are continuously looking for something better and latest. Also, the expected app updates are likely to be independent of Android OS updates. It simply means that we don’t have to wait for the new version of KitKat to get launched to get some new feature in our Gmail or You Tube app.

Taking up New Territories

Android is likely to focus more on new territories like watches, mobile gaming consoles and others. Now, this depends on the manufacturing brands like Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony and others that how they are going to utilize or improvise the Android platform to come up with more appealing products or new features in the existing products. However, there is no denial that the market for smartphones, tablets and notebooks is getting very competitive and manufacturing brands are doing their best to become more innovative.

Another interesting aspect is that KitKat got launched in 2013 but we had just one smartphone i.e. Nexus 5 running on this OS. In 2014 as new phones with Android 4.4 version will be coming up so it will be interesting to see that how different brands will explore KitKat 4.4.

Prices of leading products will drop

The interesting fact about technology is what is valuable today is discarded tomorrow. We can very well estimate this by seeing how the prices and demand of the smartphones and other devices have dropped excessively in the course of time. So there are complete chances that some of the flagship Android devices of 2013 that you didn’t purchase because of budget constraint may get available for just $50. But the question is will you like purchasing a device with outdated technology? Perhaps not!

As Google has made no official statement regarding how it is going to experiment with Android, so it will be very early to make any concrete prediction. However in light of the trends that were followed in the yester years and also after analyzing the market structure, whatever arbitrary but logical predictions are possible have been mentioned above. Rest we have to wait till things actually roll out.
