Return to Maggie’s Bridge

Joseph Parish

A quick analysis of any urban legend always divulges multiple adaptations from various accounts provided from an assortment of people. The local haunt which I am about to disclose is no different in this respect. The generally accepted late 19th century version of this tale discerns a young lady named Maggie Bloxom who became pregnant and when her child was finally delivered it was discovered to be physically deformed and mentally debilitated. Of course, her family was entirely opposed to this young baby and claimed that it was the result of demonic intervention since it failed to mutter any sounds and never cried. Maggie in her desperation for parental acceptance took her newly born child to the local bridge, intent upon tossing it ruthlessly into the river. Shortly after she had begun the dastardly deed, the child cried out for the first time. Hearing the forlorn cries of her child she quickly realized that she had made a very grave error in judgment and tried to reach the baby to rescue it. She failed in her attempt to retrieve the poor child and she became extremely remorseful. As a result of her actions the poor girl realized her destiny was to either live with the tragedy for the remainder of her life or take her own life. She decided that her best course of action was to end her life.

The alternate version of this ghastly tale relates how young Maggie was traveling along the road one evening and as she approached the bridge section of the road, she was thrown from her horse in a violent and perilous accident which ultimately ended in her decapitation. The rumors have it that on moonlit evenings when you arrive at the bridge and call out her name, she will appear to you. Like the previous version some seekers claim that Maggie will appear on her horse while others contend that she can be seen searching for something in the surrounding wooded area. Lastly, some observers claim she will appear to you with her decapitated head held securely in her hands.

Regardless of which version of Maggie’s death you consider, the usual process is that if you are driving across the bridge and in the middle of it you will turn your vehicle off, honk your horn three times, get out and run to each corner of the bridge calling out to young Maggie in the following manner:

“Maggie, I have your baby”

You will initiate a series of paranormal activity which many claims is not pleasant in the least. After calling out to Maggie, it is said that you will see a white sobbing figure approaching the bridge shouting:

“Give me my baby”.

It is said that the best time to visit Maggie at the bridge is at night. The area of the bridge is creepy, totally isolated, and eerie at best. Many a visitor to the location has attested to seeing figures moving within the nearby woods located on either side of the bridge. Paranormal investigation has shown the road to be extremely haunted. One team of investigators has exposed measurements of the huge electro-magnetic energy in the vicinity of the bridge. Several results have implied that Maggie will unexpectedly appear on her horse holding her unattached head securely in her arms while other accounts relate how she can be seen frantically searching the wooded area for her missing child. From all accounts, it is apparent that Maggie is still lingering along the roadway leading in and over the bridge. As a visitor gets back into his or her car they will find it extremely difficult to start, the radio will begin changing stations in an unnatural manner, the witnessing of blue orbs around the bridge and even hear unexplained voices.

Maggie's Bridge is located in Woodland, Delaware near the town of Seaford. Traveling on the Woodland Church Road leading past the Woodland Ferry and heading towards Galestown, you encounter the bridged in question. Keep in mind that this road runs parallel to the Nanticoke River. As you approach the bridge you first see an abundance of graffiti on both the metal guardrails and upon the road itself. These primitive artistic endeavors are likely the result of incorrigible teens that go to the bridge in the hopes of seeing Maggie herself after shouting the familiar phrase to her.

To add additional fuel to the folktale it is said that within the confines of a local cemetery in the nearby woods one can discover a desecrated graveyard which accommodates many generations of Bloxom family members including the remains of Maggie herself. This however will be the quest for a future trip to the area.

In the course of history, we frequently encounter tales which developed from a mixture of truth and an active imagination. Whatever source that these seeds spur from the resulting tale is passed down from one generation to the next. With this note, I close with a few final remarks. Maggie, if she exists is a tortured soul who cannot move on in death as a result of her endless pain which she feels. She is, in short, earth bound forever to experience the torment and humiliation from the living. I am not saying that the tale of Maggie is real or fake, however in either case I say let her rest in peace.
