Classic Road Trip Games To Eat Up The Empty Miles

Whether it’s with friends or family, a road trip is a perfect holiday to take with loved ones. It gives you the freedom to go where you want at your own pace, making for a relaxing getaway. It’s also quite easy to plan because once you’ve got your route planned and make sure you’re covered for car hire insurance abroad, you’re ready to get the show on the road.

No matter how much fun you’re having, though, there’s always going to be those moments when the road seems never-ending and passengers are getting restless. Keeping all your passengers entertained is very important, so here are a few of the best car-ride games to keep the fun flowing.

I Spy

This is an absolute classic and it really should be a go-to game when the boredom sets in. The first player begins with the line ‘I spy with my little eye, something beginning with…’ Fellow passengers then take turns to ask yes or no questions until they can guess the object. It’s an oldie but a goodie!

License Plate

If the scenery is a little bland, this one is always an easy option. Passengers take it in turns to come up with funny meanings for the letters of the license plates that go past. For example, BWF could be, “Big Whales Forever”, and so on.

Celebrity

At those times when neither the landscape or the road has anything of interest to offer, this one is a winner. One person chooses a celebrity and then answers questions as if they were that famous person. The first one to guess the celebrity first is the winner!

Name That Song

Speaking of famous people, why not try this fun guessing game. Someone has to read out the lyrics from a well-known song without any tune or emotion and the others have the task of guessing the song. It’s more difficult than it sounds.

Categories

This is another age-old classic but one that’s very effective for spicing up a trip. The starter chooses a category, such as dog breeds, for example, then everyone goes around naming something belonging to that category until the next person can’t think of anything new.

The Quiet Game

If you’re travelling with tetchy children and all you want is a little peace and quiet, this game is the answer. The aim is simple: everyone just has to remain as quiet as they can for as long as possible and the first person to make a noise loses. What a genius way to keep the noise down!

Rule Book

On the opposite side of the coin, this one will definitely liven up a long drive. Everyone is given the chance to make up a rule, like “whenever I tap my nose everyone has to clap their hands”, or “whenever we pass a truck everyone has to touch the roof of the car.” Every time a rule is performed, all but the last person to catch on earns a point. The person with the fewest points by the end loses. It’s fast paced and lots of fun for everyone.

Being equipped to stave off boredom on a long trip is hugely important and with these fun games in your back pocket you’ll be one step ahead.
