Over 7 Million Volkswagen Vehicles Delivered in 2014

Volkswagen is currently the third largest automotive manufacturer in the world in terms of total world-wide

Volkswagen is currently the third largest automotive manufacturer in the world in terms of total world-wide sales, behind only Toyota and General Motors. Current sales trends are encouraging this automotive juggernaut in the belief that it will surpass these two manufacturers in the next couple years. With the announcement that Volkswagen has delivered 7.4 million vehicles from January to September.

A big part of Volkswagen's success in improving sales has been an explosion of demand in emerging markets. China is Volkswagen's single biggest market in the world with nearly two and three quarters of a million units delivered in the first three quarters of 2013. In October of 2014 it was announced that Volkswagen will be extending its joint venture with China's FAW Group Corp by 25 years. Volkswagen also has a joint venture with China's SAIC Motor Corp. This puts them in the driver’s seat versus automotive rivals with half of the “big four” automakers in China. Volkswagen has grown in China since entering its automotive market in 1985. Its investments in this market over nearly 30 years have made it the market leader in China.

Volkswagen is also striving to make inroads in the emerging market of India. With over 1.2 billion people, India has the untapped potential to be an enormous market for the world’s automakers as its star ascends. The automaker is focusing on a new strategy for Indian auto sales by increasing the reliance on locally manufactured parts in their vehicles sold in India. This will have the dual benefit of lowering the cost of the parts and appeasing any local groups in India that may have protectionist urges. While Volkswagen has not yet made the strides in India that have made it the dominant international automaker in China, they are working hard to change that.

Volkswagen is also keeping their eye on the ball in more established markets where they have been a big player for a while. Nowhere are they bigger than on their home turf of Europe. As of November of this year, auto sales in Europe have risen for a fourteenth month in a row. "The Volkswagen Group, the largest European automaker, posted a 6.9 percent gain in sales, led by the 20 percent increase in its most affordable brand, SEAT."

Volkswagen has its eye on becoming the world leader in global auto sales and their sales numbers from the first three quarters of last year show they are well on their way. They recently revealed multibillion dollar investments over the next five years to help fuel the growth for new car models, global expansion, and surpassing all rivals in global sales numbers.
