Hyundai Future Technology at 2015 Consumer Electronics Show

Technologies once considered in the realm of science fiction are being displayed by the auto manufacturer Hyundai as part of its 2015 model lineup. At the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Hyundai Future Transportation Technology is being displayed as technologies that will provide additional safety to drivers in the form of driver assistance systems and improve the entire drive experience by showcasing advanced infotainment features.

Leading the charge is the augmented reality head-up display system. Basic Head-Up Displays (HUD) appeared in automobiles in the late eighties but were only capable of projecting the speedometer so that the driver would keep his focus on the road. Hyundai has incorporated a futuristic HUD in the 2015 Genesis which displays an array of information such as Smart Cruise Control status, Forward Collision and Lane Departure Warnings and Blind Spot Detection. All this is projected at a perceived virtual distance of about six feet ahead of the driver so as to maximize legibility while driving.

Hyundai’s augmented reality HUD concept, which is production-ready, is far ahead of the competition as it passes on information to the driver. Animations are used to describe the road conditions ahead as well as warnings when a car is about to enter into the driver’s lane. Arrows are used to display exit ramps, street signs and one-way marking are highlighted.

As if all of this wasn’t enough, Hyundai does one better by linking the HUD with a wearable band. Warnings showing on the HUD will cause the band to vibrate. The wearable is also equipped with a heart rate monitor which is capable of calling 911 if the heart rate of the driver changes rapidly.

In addition to all the above, Hyundai will demonstrate what they call The Hyundai Cockpit Concept. Included are:

*Driver alertness monitor with rest recommendation messages
*Blind spot and safe driver distance warnings
*Advanced low fuel level warnings
*Advanced turn-by-turn navigation
*Navigation transfer from the car to a mobile device
*Log information display with daily driving activities
*Sharing information between vehicle, cloud, tablet, smartphones and wearables
*Gas stations as they get closer on the route
*Heart rate monitoring

There is a multitude of future infotainment features on display, too. Hyundai is exploring the tablet as a tool for controlling features and back seat monitoring. There are specialized rear seat tablet mounts, copilot/navigator controls allowing a passenger to select infotainment and comfort features keeping the driver distraction free. Other features include state of the art audio-video systems, advanced navigation and climate control features.

Showcasing state-of-the-art 3-D hand-gesture recognition inside The Cockpit Concept, is the ability to recognize driver commands associated with finding buttons and switches. This 3-D hand-gesture system can be used to select between navigation, infotainment, audio and climate control. There are even smartphone connectivity functions included, all with simple hand gesture shortcuts.

These are but a number of technologies being displayed as part of Hyundai's future vision for the human/machine interface. Hyundai is particularly proud to display ADAS – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Six of these systems will be on display at CES, all with a high probability of being incorporated into near future models. Amongst these is the concept Hyundai calls V2X. This is essentially connectivity between vehicle infrastructure and devices, highlights of which are:

*Remote auto parking will automate all parking maneuvers
*Collision with pedestrian warning - V2P (Vehicle to Pedestrian)
*Traffic signal information, speed suggestion based on area, school zone info, weather info - V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure)
*Emergency braking, intersection assist, road construction warning - V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle)

Other features include highway driving assist, distance/speed control, lane guidance control, and auto speed adjustment. One feature is designed to avoid accidents and provide the driver with emergency help if he becomes impaired. If the wearable device determines that the driver is impaired, this system will safely guide the vehicle to the shoulder and stops it. There is another accident prevention feature on display called Pedestrian Alert. If the system determines a collision with a pedestrian is imminent, the vehicle issues a warning sound and brakes are activated.
